The Adriatic Question in Italy’s Foreign Policy During the 20th Century: A Review of the Recent Italian International Relations Historiography. The aim of this essay is to review the recently re-discovered interest by part of Italian historiography, in particular of the historians of international relations, for the study of Italy’s strategies and policies in the Adriatic and Balkan area in the contemporary era.

The Adriatic question was one of the major causes leading to Italy’s participation in World War I. The Treaty of London, signed on 26 April 1915, to set the conditions for Italian participation in the war, was an historical turning-point in Italy’s foreign policy.
