Economic Form in Teaching Design, between aesthetics, engineering and technologies. Some recent experiences in design studio

“Ours is an economically oriented age. In earlier times, word-view was more important. Today, nobody can exist without considering economics: we are concerned with economic form. (..) Economic form arises out of function and material. Study of material naturally precedes understanding of function.”
(J.Albers, Teaching Form Through Practice, 1928)

Surveying the façade, between language and technology in contemporary production

Technology, Culture and Knowledge

The binomial Technology-Cultural Heritage seems by now an established fact. There are many
tools, procedures and applications that we can define technological and that intervene, in always
different and articulated ways, in the knowledge, management, analysis, conservation, protection
and enhancement of Cultural Heritage in all areas of the world.

Experimental archaeology for the interpretation of use-wear The case study of the small tools of Fontana Ranuccio (late Lower Palaeolithic, Central Italy)

Recent technological studies of Levantine and European lithic assemblages from the Late
Lower Palaeolithic show that the small unretouched and retouched flakes (small tools)
found in many sites of this period are relevant technological elements. Their presence
in the lithic assemblages of the Late Lower Palaeolithic allows us to reconsider the role
of bifacial tools as techno-cultural markers of this chronological phase. In this article we
discuss the relevance of experimental archaeology for the interpretation of the use-wear

People, technology, and governance for sustainability: the contribution of systems and cyber-systemic thinking

We live in an ever-increasing unsustainable world in which sustainability shows to be a complex multidimensional and multi-stakeholder problem. The complexity to address is increasingly beyond our traditional response capabilities. Hence the challenge is “how we account for this complexity in the quest for a sustainable world underpinned by inclusion and fairness” (Espejo 2018).

Istituzioni, nuove tecnologie, sviluppo economico

The essay deals with the relationship between institutions, new techologies and economic developement. The first part provides a broad overview of the contributions of economic theory, economic history and political science to the controversial questions on how to promote economic developement and in particular on the role played by innovation. Intitutions (i.e. democracy, rule of law, independent judiciary, professional bureaucracy, etc.) are considered by recent literature as a main factor.
