Impact of the sars-cov2 pandemic on orthodontic therapies: An italian experience of teleorthodontics

Objective: To assess the possibility of controlling patients at a distance according to principles of teleorthodontics to understand its possible usefulness in the future routine activity and the impact pandemic may have had on different types of orthodontic treatments. Material and Methods: One hundred orthodontic patients (57 F, 43 M, age 7-46) during quarantine were checked through videocalls and photos sent by patients following proper instructions. Three groups have been distinguished based on the type of therapy: A-fixed appliances; B-removable appliances; C-clear aligners.

A current tool in facial aesthetics perception of orthodontic patient: The digital warping

OBJECTIVES The procedure of warping, usually and interchangeably called morphing, elicit profile aesthetic preferences in orthodontic patients using the most common cephalometric softwares. It’s a method makes it easy to construct a prediction picture of the face based on changes to the soft-tissue profile effected by orthodontic or surgical treatment. In the age of new generations increasingly influenced by selfies and photo editing applications on smartphones, this study aims to determine general aesthetic preference and to find out whether it was affected by sex, age or real profile.

Periodontal evaluation of palatally impacted maxillary canines treated by closed approach with ultrasonic surgery and orthodontic treatment: a retrospective pilot study

Aim of this study is the evaluation of the periodontal status of impacted canines treated by closed approach with ultrasonic surgery and orthodontic treatment compared with contralateral spontaneously erupted teeth. The periodontal conditions of the teeth adjacent to the canines (lateral incisors and first premolar) were also considered. 17 patients (9 females and 8 males; mean age: 15.2 years) with unilateral palatal impaction of maxillary canine were selected. All patients were treated by closed-flap surgery with ultrasonic instruments.

First and second permanent molars with failed or delayed eruption: clinical and statistical analyses

The aim of this work was to analyze data of patients with failed or delayed eruption of first and second permanent molars, to assess the effectiveness of the treatment methods used. Methods Epidemiologic and clinical data of 125 patients (mean age 14.08 ± 4.04 years) with 197 affected molars (30 first and 167 second molars) were retrospectively analyzed. The treatment outcome was known in 161 molars after patient drop-out (20 patients with 36 molars).

Periodontal health and compliance: a comparison between Essix and Hawley retainers

INTRODUCTION: Many studies on removable retainers have focused on retention efficacy and characteristics. However, studies on plaque accumulation, periodontal health, breakages, and patient compliance are still lacking. Thus, in this study, we aimed at evaluating these parameters in 2 groups of young patients wearing Essix or Hawley retainers for a 6-month period.

Three-dimensional evaluation of dental movement in orthodontics [Valutazione tridimensionale del movimento dentale in ortodonzia]

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to evaluate three-dimensionally the dental movement of impacted palatally canines, following an opercolectomy performed by laser. We also monitored patients with both digital and conventional method, with the purpose of evaluating the accuracy and validity of the monitoring methods compared. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed 10 patients, 5 with double inclusion and 5 with single inclusion, for a total of 15 canines, impacted in the palatal site, were considered.

Skin irritation from a facial mask in Class III malocclusion: evaluation of individual silicone chin cups in a group of 100 children

BACKGROUND:

Reverse headgear (a facial mask) is one of the most frequently used interceptive orthodontic devices in patients with Class III malocclusion. It is a simple device but may present some drawbacks related to pressure on the skin generated by the forehead and chin supports linked to the maxillary intraoral appliance by elastics. This can cause injury to the chin and lips.
METHODS:

Orthodontic treatment and third molars development: longitudinal study on radiographs

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of first premolar extraction on third molar angulation during fixed orthodontic treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample of this study included pre-treatment and post-treatment orthopantomographs (OPG) of 40 patients, 17 males and 23 women (106 third molars), treated by fixed orthodontic appliances at the Department of Orthodontics, Sapienza University, Rome. All individuals had both first and second mandibular molars present at all stages and initial malocclusion.

Evaluation of vision in gnathological and orthodontic patients with temporomandibular disorders: a prospective experimental observational cohort study

Objectives: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), orthodontic diseases, and vision dysfunctions seem to be strictly related. The purpose of this study was to prove the relationship, to evaluate the prevalence and the distribution of vision defects in dysfunctional and orthodontic patients, and to establish the type of the relationship.

Uprighting impacted mandibular second molar using a skeletal anchorage: a case report

The aim of this case report is to present an innovative combined orthodontic-surgical technique to disimpact mandibular second molar (MM2) using an orthodontic miniscrew and an elastic chain. The impact on the Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) was also evaluated. Using the present techinique, it is possible to expose the impacted tooth, insert a self-drilling miniscrew in the retromolar area, and remove the bud of third mandibular molar.
