Oncological Endocrinology

Working in the largest University Hospital in central Italy, we are a referral center for oncological patients suffering from a variety of tumors and/or developing endocrine complications. This comprises a lot of clinical work that gives us the opportunity to improve their quality of life, morbidity and mortality. We strive to give the most to our patients, and they give back energy, motivation and their happy participation in several clinical studies.

8th edition of AJCC/TNM staging system of thyroid cancer: what to expect (ITCO#2)

The 8th edition of AJCC/TNM staging system for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has recently been published. The aim of this study was to compare AJCC/TNM staging 7th and 8th edition in terms of tumor stage distribution in a multicenter, consecutive and prospective cohort of newly diagnosed DTC collected in a web-based observational database. Additional information concerning the extent of minimal extrathyroidal extension was collected. A cohort of 1765 DTC patients (76% females, median age 48 years, 94% papillary histotype) was analyzed. Real-World Performance of the American Thyroid Association Risk Estimates in Predicting 1-Year Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Outcomes: A Prospective Multicenter Study of 2000 Patients

Background: One of the most widely used risk stratification systems for estimating individual patients' risk of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) persistence or recurrence is proposed by the American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines. The 2015 revision, that has increased the number of patients considered at low or intermediate risk, has been validated in several retrospective, single referral-center studies.

Selective use of radioactive iodine therapy for papillary thyroid cancers with low or lower-intermediate recurrence risk

Context: Current guidelines recommend a selective use of radioiodine treatment (RAI) for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC).

Objective: To determine how policy changes affect the use of RAI and the short-term outcomes of patients.

Design: Retrospective analysis of longitudinal data.

Setting: Academic referral center.
