Assessment of masticatory and cervical muscles' thickness by ultrasonography in patients with facial asymmetry

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the thickness of masticatory and cervical muscles (temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid) and facial asymmetries in young patients.METHODS:
21 subjects were selected, through a detailed anamnesis and clinical examination, in order to assess the normality of oral tissues, the presence of normal occlusion, the absence of alteration in tooth dimensions and of congenital or developmental anomalies of lips, mouth or face.

Unilateral hemimandibular hyperactivity: clinical features of a population of 128 patients

Purpose: Facial asymmetries due to unilateral condylar hyperactivity are often a challenge both for maxillo-facial surgeons and for orthodontists; the current literature shows different opinions about aetiology, classification, treatment approach and timing. We made a retrospective study on patients suffering from unilateral condylar hyperactivity between 1997 and 2015 in our Department; clinical features and treatment options were grouped and compared with literature.

Slice functional condylectomy and piezosurgery: a proposal in unilateral condylar hyperplasia treatment

Condylar hyperplasia is a temporomandibular joint progressive disease characterized by an excessive growth of the mandibular condyle. Condylar overgrowth represents one of the most common causes of facial asymmetry in early adulthood. To date, there is not a clearly established origin of the disease: genetic, traumatic, infective, vascular, and functional factors are involved hypotheses. Clinically, condylar hyperplasia presentation is characterized by an asymmetry of the lower third of the face, deviation of the chin, inclination of the labial line and malocclusion.
