The prevalence of peri-implant diseases in patients with metabolic syndrome: a case-control study on an Italian population sample

BACKGROUND: The correlation of peri-implantitis with systemic diseases is still highly debated and controversial in literature. The objective of this work was to evaluate the possible association between peri-implant diseases and metabolic syndrome.METHODS: In this case-control study, subjects healthy or affected by metabolic syndrome, with at least one dental implant with > 5 years of functional loading were screened to detect peri-implant health or diseases.

The staging and grading system in defining periodontitis cases: consistency and accuracy amongst periodontal experts, general dentists and undergraduate students

Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate consistency and accuracy of the periodontitis staging and grading classification system. Methods: Thirty participants (10 periodontal experts, 10 general dentists and 10 undergraduate students) and a gold-standard examiner were asked to classify 25 fully documented periodontitis cases twice. Fleiss kappa was used to estimate consistency across examiners. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to calculate consistency across time.

Treatment of Stage I-III Periodontitis -The EFP S3 Level Clinical Practice Guideline

The recently introduced 2017 World Workshop classification of periodontitis, incorporating stages and grades of disease, aims to link disease classification with approaches to prevention and treatment, as it not only describes disease severity and extent, but also the degree of complexity and an individual`s risk. There is, therefore, a need for evidence-based clinical guidelines providing recommendations to treat periodontitis.

Flapless application of enamel matrix derivative in periodontal retreatment: a multicenter randomized feasibility trial

AIM: To investigate the potential benefit of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) as adjunct to re-instrumentation of residual pockets persisting after steps 1 and 2 of periodontal therapy.MATERIAL & METHODS: 44 adult patients participated in a multicenter feasibility randomized clinical trial with split-mouth design. They had presented at re-evaluation after initial non-surgical periodontal therapy (steps 1 and 2 of periodontal therapy) for generalized periodontitis with at least 2 teeth with residual probing pocket depths (PPD) ≥ 5 and ≤ 8 mm, with bleeding on probing (BOP).

Impact of Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis) on periodontitis and caries. Systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: The oral health-promoting effects of green tea are attributed to its polyphenol components. Aim of this work was to systematically review the literature in search for clinical trials assessing green tea for managing periodontitis and caries.
Methods: Randomized clinical trials comparing the efficacy of green tea versus control groups in oral hygiene and gingival health; periodontitis; caries; periodontal pathogens number; Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus spp. Meta-analysis and meta-regression analysis were performed.

The association between periodontal disease and serum biomarkers levels in haemodialysis patients: a narrative review

The vast majority of studies has demonstrated that periodontal infection promotes significant systemic inflammatory status. The specific effects of these systemic alterations in response to periodontal inflammation have been comprehensively described and appear to be highly stereotyped, and it is well known the pathophysiological mechanism related to immune functioning linking periodontitis and pathologies such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Periodontal microbiological status influences the occurrence of cyclosporine-a and tacrolimus- induced gingival overgrowth

Immune suppressed renal transplant patients are more prone to developing oral tissue alterations due to medications associated with a pleiotropic set of side effects involving the oral cavity. Drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) is the most commonly encountered side effect resulting from administration of calcineurin inhibitors such as cyclosporine-A (CsA), the standard first-line treatment for graft rejection prevention in transplant patients.

Impact of periodontal inflammation on nutrition and inflammation markers in hemodialysis patients

Background: Malnutrition-inflammation complex syndrome (MICS) is a common and usually concurrent condition occurring in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD), with a pathogenesis linked to biological and in situ environmental traditional risk factors. Periodontitis, one of the major types of infection-driven inflammation, often co-occurs in the in the hemodialysis population and correlates with markers of malnutrition and inflammation, such as albumin, creatinine, and C-reactive protein.

Evaluation of salivary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-8) in periodontal patients undergoing non-surgical periodontal therapy and mouthwash based on ozonated olive oil: a randomized clinical trial

Background: Extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a pivotal role in the damage to the periodontal tissue in patients with periodontitis. Scaling and root planning (SRP) attempt to control the plaque amount and consequentially reduce the bacterial load. Non-surgical periodontal treatment could be integrated with drug therapy and physiotherapy procedures such as ozone therapy.
