The Ventricular System Enlarges Abnormally in the Seventies, Earlier in Men, and First in the Frontal Horn: A Study Based on More Than 3,000 Scans

Objectives: To detect on computed tomography (CT) brain scans the trajectories of normal and abnormal ventricular enlargement during aging. Methods: For each 1-year age cohort, we assessed in 3,193 axial CT scans the Evans’ index (EI) in the anterior frontal horns and the parieto-occipital (POR) and temporal ratio (TR) in the posterior and inferior horns. Cut-off values for abnormal enlargement were based on previous clinical studies. Results: The mean age associated with normal linear measures was 71 years.

Intracranial tuberculous mass lesions treated with thalidomide in an immunocompetent child from a low tuberculosis endemic country: A case report

Rationale: Tuberculous meningitis is a highly morbid, often fatal disease.
Patient concern: We describe a case of an Italian child.
Diagnoses: we diagnosed early a Tuberculous meningitis complicated by the occurrence of hydrocephalus, stroke, and
paradoxical reaction with brain pseudo-abscesses.
Interventions: The child started readily a specific therapy associated with steroids and thalidomide was introduced few month later.
Outcomes: the patient had a favorable outcome without neurologic sequelae.

Vetriculoatrial shunt in adults. A case series, with emphasis on atrial catheter migration

Objectives: Few studies have described retrograde migration of the atrial catheter tip in ventriculoatrial shunt to treat adult hydrocephalus. Methods: We placed ventriculoatrial shunts in 25 selected adult patients with a previous complicated abdominal surgery or concurrent bowel disease and in patients with persistent symptoms after a ventriculoperitoneal, potentially due to conflicting internal abdominal pressure. Clinical and radiological follow-ups were performed at least 18 months postoperatively. Results: No mortality or early or late infection occurred in the series of patients.
