Low-grade endotoxaemia enhances artery thrombus growth via Toll-like receptor 4: implication formyocardial infarction

Aims Low-grade endotoxaemia is detectable in human circulation but its role in thrombosis is still unclear. Methods and results. We measured serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) concentration, soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin), a marker of platelet activation, and zonulin, a marker of gut permeability, in peripheral circulation, coronary thrombi, and intracoronary blood of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI, n = 50) and stable angina (SA) (n = 50), respectively, and in controls (n = 50). Experimental study was carried out in mice to assess if Escherichia coli-LPS (E.

External hemorrhoidal thrombosis in the elderly patients. Conservative and surgical management

BACKGROUND: External hemorrhoidal thrombosis is a common disease with an acute anal pain as the major symptom. It is astonishing the lack of studies which investigates the most effective treatment and there are not guidelines. Furthermore nobody has evaluated this peculiar condition in elderly people.

there is a great future in plastics. Personalized approach to the management of hilar cholangiocarcinoma using a 3-d-printed liver model

In recent years, three-dimensional (3-D) printing technology has become a standard tool that is used in several medical applications such as education, surgical training simulation and planning, and doctor–patient communication. Although liver surgery is ideally complemented by the use of preoperative 3-D-printed models, only a few publications have addressed this topic. We report the case of a 29-year-old Caucasian woman admitted for a Klatskin tumor infiltrating the right portal vein requiring surgery that required complex vascular reconstruction.

Deep venous thrombosis and abortion: an unusual clinical manifestation of severe form of pectus excavatum

Pectus excavatum is a chest wall malformation with a strong psychological and aesthetic impact. Rarely, pectus excavatum patients can show respiratory or cardiac symptoms occurring mainly during physical exertion. We report a case of a 34-year-old pregnant woman with a severe degree of pectus excavatum who developed serious cardiovascular disease resulting in spontaneous twin abortion at the twenty-first week of gestation. Cardiovascular disease was resolved after open surgical correction of pectus excavatum.
