Optical coherence tomography of choroid in common neurological diseases

The choroid is involved directly and indirectly in many pathological conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, myopia-related chorioretinal atrophy and central serous chorioretinopathy. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has gradually become a fundamental part of modern resources in the hands of ophthalmologists. The enhanced depth imaging technique and swept-source OCT make a great contribution to conventional in vivo choroid assessment.

Comparison of short-term choroidal thickness and retinal morphological changes after intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy with ranibizumab or aflibercept in treatment-naive eyes

PURPOSE: To evaluate choroidal thickness (CT) and retinal morphological changes in eyes with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) following ranibizumab or aflibercept intravitreal treatment.

Macular ganglion cell layer thickness after macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair: scleral buckling versus pars plana vitrectomy

(1) Background: We evaluated macular ganglion cell layer-inner plexiform layer (GCL-IPL) thickness in patients with primary macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) treated with scleral buckling (SB) or pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). (2) Methods: In this retrospective, observational study, we reviewed the medical records of patients undergoing SB or PPV surgery for macula-off RRD. SD-OCT was performed at three and 12 months after surgery.

Acute exudative polymorphous vitelliform maculopathy: to bolus or not to bolus?

Acute exudative polymorphous vitelliform maculopathy (AEPVM) is a rare bilateral maculopathy characterized by chronic and long-term course. We report a case of AEPVM with an unusual presentation and management in a middle-aged man. He presented with clinical features of bilateral AEPVM accompanied by multiple intraretinal cysts, with a sudden increase of intraretinal fluid and visual function deterioration over a span of few days. Therefore, we administered empirically an intravenous bolus injection of methylprednisolone.

Optical coherence tomography of retinal and choroidal layers in patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia treated with lipoprotein apheresis

PURPOSE: Detect and quantify morpho-functional alterations of the retina and choroid in patients affected by familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) treated with lipoprotein apheresis (LA) using optic coherence tomography (OCT) and optic coherence tomography-angriography (OCTA). DESIGN: Observational study. SUBJECTS: To be diagnosed: A group of 20 patients (40 eyes) being clinically and genetically diagnosed as FH and under treatment (FH-Group)", for at least 2 years, was compared to a control group of 20 healthy subjects (40 eyes), with a normal lipid profile and no ocular disease (CT-Group).
