Peritoneal dialysis in older adults: evaluation of clinical, nutritional, metabolic outcomes, and quality of life

The number of older adults requiring dialysis is increasing worldwide, whereas the use of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in this population is lower respect to younger patients, despite the theoretical advantages of PD respect to hemodialysis. This is most likely due to the concern that older patients may not be able to correctly and safely manage PD.
We aimed to prospectively compare clinical, nutritional and metabolic outcomes and measures of quality of life between younger (<65years old) and older (≥65years old) patients on PD.

Italian Sexual Minority Older Adults in Healthcare Services: Identities, Discriminations, and Competencies

Purpose This study explores perceptions and experiences related to healthcare utilization in a group of Italian sexual minority
older adults, to understand the unique challenges faced by this population when accessing healthcare services. Older adults
represent one of the subgroups exposed to the highest risk within sexual minorities with regard to physical and mental health.
Method Data collection occurred between October 2018 and April 2019. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 23

Active lifestyles in older adult. An integrated predictive model of physical activity and exercise

Physical activity and exercise have been identified as behaviors to preserve physical and mental health in older adults. The aim of the present study was to test the Integrated Behavior Change model in exercise and physical activity behaviors. The study evaluated two different samples of older adults: the first engaged in exercise class, the second doing spontaneous physical activity. The key analyses relied on Variance-Based Structural Modeling, which were performed by means of WARP PLS 6.0 statistical software.

Prognosis of elderly gastric cancer patients after surgery: a nomogram to predict survival

This study aimed to identify clinicopathological factors associated with the outcome of elderly patients with gastric cancer (GC), and to construct a nomogram for individual risk prediction. Tumor characteristics of 143 patients aged ≥ 80 years underwent surgery for GC were collected and analyzed by uni- and multivariate analyses. A prognostic nomogram was constructed using the factors which resulted to be significantly associated with overall survival. Discrimination of nomogram was tested by Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves and boxplots.

Bimodal cochlear implantation in elderly patients

Objective: Bimodal stimulation is a standard option for asymmetric hearing loss in adults. Questions have been raised whether receiving two stimulations may conflict in elderly listeners where the central integration of an acoustic/electrical signal may be very important to obtain benefit in terms of speech perception.
Design: Clinical retrospective study.
Study Sample: The outcomes from 17 bimodal cochlear implant (CI) users were analysed. The test material consisted of speech audiometry in quiet and in noise (STARR and Matrix).

Alterazioni della deglutizione correlate all’età: la presbifagia

The anatomical, physiological and functional changes that contribute to alterations in swallowing as part of “aging” are called presbyphagia, and involve natural diminish- ment of functional reserve. These progressive alterations put older adults at risk for dys- phagia with an increased incidence of penetration and aspiration during swallowing leading to dangerous complications. The prevalence of dysphagia goes from 30% in in- dependently living older people, to 60% in institutionalized patients.

Is poor sleep associated with obesity in older adults? A narrative review of the literature

Introduction
To address the worldwide epidemic of obesity, a sizable literature implicates sleep problems in the onset of obesity in younger populations. However, less is known about how this process may operate among older adults, which is of concern, given demographic shifts that have resulted in a much higher proportion of developed nations around the world reaching late life.
