Efficacy of lactoferrin oral administration in the treatment of anemia and anemia of inflammation in pregnant and non-pregnant women: an interventional study

The discovery of the ferroportin-hepcidin complex has led to a critical review on the treatment of anemia and anemia of inflammation (AI). Ferroportin, the only known mammalian iron exporter from cells to blood, is negatively regulated by hepcidin, a hormone peptide able to bind to ferroportin, leading to its degradation. Therefore, new efficient therapeutic interventions acting on hepcidin and ferroportin are imperative to manage anemia and AI.

Common Pitfalls in the Management of Patients with Micronutrient Deficiency. Keep in Mind the Stomach

Micronutrient deficiencies are relatively common, in particular iron and cobalamin deficiency, and may potentially lead to life-threatening clinical consequences when not promptly recognized and treated, especially in elderly patients. The stomach plays an important role in the homeostasis of some important hematopoietic micronutrients like iron and cobalamin, and probably in others equally important such as ascorbic acid, calcium, and magnesium.

Peak oxygen uptake in heart failure. Look behind the number!

An impaired peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak) during a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) has been shown extensively to correlate with a poor prognosis in heart failure (HF) patients. Even, the abovementioned relationship remains effective irrespective of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), a most recent study by Sato showing an unaltered V̇O2peak prognostic power also in the early defined HF with mid-range ejection fraction class (HFmrEF).

Dose-dense weekly chemotherapy in advanced ovarian cancer: an updated meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Objective: The use of dose-dense weekly chemotherapy in the management of advanced ovarian cancer (OC) remains controversial. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy of dose-dense regimen to improve clinical outcomes in OC patients with the inclusion of new trials.
