Detecting white spot lesions on dental photography using deep learning: A pilot study

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to apply deep learning to detect white spot lesions in dental photographs.METHODS: Using 434 photographic images of 51 patients, a dataset of 2781 cropped tooth segments was generated. Pixelwise annotations of sound enamel as well as fluorotic, carious or other types of hypomineralized lesions were generated by experts and assessed by an independent second reviewer. The union of the reviewed annotations were used to segment the hard tissues (region-of-interest, ROI) of each image. SqueezeNet was employed for modelling.

Reasons for tooth extractions and related risk factors in adult patients: a cohort study

Background: The aimof this studywas to evaluate oral status, the reasons for tooth extractions and related risk factors in adult patients attending a hospital dental practice. Methods: 120 consecutive patients ranging from23 to 91 years in age (mean age of 63.3 - 15.8) having a total of 554 teeth extracted were included. Surveys about general health status were conducted and potential risk factors such as smoking, diabetes and age were investigated.

Impact of Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis) on periodontitis and caries. Systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: The oral health-promoting effects of green tea are attributed to its polyphenol components. Aim of this work was to systematically review the literature in search for clinical trials assessing green tea for managing periodontitis and caries.
Methods: Randomized clinical trials comparing the efficacy of green tea versus control groups in oral hygiene and gingival health; periodontitis; caries; periodontal pathogens number; Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus spp. Meta-analysis and meta-regression analysis were performed.

Endodontic treatment of the deciduous tooth [Il trattamento endodontico del dente deciduo]

OBJECTIVES Carious pathology has a progres-sively degenerative trend which in the absence of adequate treatment can lead to injure the pulp organ, imposing an endodontic approach to the dental element. The aim of this work is to provide the clinical indications, the methods to be undertaken in the end-odontic treatment of the primary teeth, as well as the choice of the most suitable materials, in order to obtain predictable therapeutic results and safeguard the integrity of the elements involved.

Mouthwash based on ozonated olive oil in caries prevention: a preliminary in-vitro study

(1) Background: Ozone (O3) proved to oxidize organic and inorganic compounds, and its efficacy against bacteria, viruses and fungi plasma membranes was of interest. Ozone vehicle can be a gaseous form, ozonated water or ozonized oil. The aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the efficacy of ozonated olive oil against Streptococcus mutans. (2) Methods: Two different commercial mouthwashes were tested: Ialozon Blu (IB) (Gemavip, Cagliari, Italy), with ozonated olive oil, and Ialozon Rose (IR) (Gemavip, Cagliari, Italy), with ozonated olive oil, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E.
