Withdrawal from acute medication normalises short-term cortical synaptic potentiation in medication overuse headache

Objectives: To study the effects of a standard acute medication withdrawal program on short-term cortical plasticity mechanisms in patients with medication overuse headache (MOH). Methods: Thirteen patients with MOH and 16 healthy volunteers underwent repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the left motor cortex; in patients with MOH, recordings were performed before and after a 3-week medication withdrawal program. Ten trains of 10 stimuli each (120% resting motor threshold) were delivered at 1 Hz or 5 Hz in two separate sessions in a randomised order.

MOTOR DYSFUNCTION IN MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT AS TESTED BY KINEMATIC ANALYSIS AND TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION

Objective
Previous studies have demonstrated voluntary movement alterations as well as motor cortex excitability and plasticity changes in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). To investigate the pathophysiology of movement abnormalities in MCI, we tested possible relationships between movement abnormalities and primary motor cortex alterations in patients.

Re-emergent Tremor in Parkinson's Disease: The Role of the Motor Cortex

Background: Parkinson's disease patients may show a tremor that appears after a variable delay while the arms are kept outstretched (re-emergent tremor). The objectives of this study were to investigate re-emergent tremor pathophysiology by studying the role of the primary motor cortex in this tremor and making a comparison with rest tremor. Methods: We enrolled 10 Parkinson's disease patients with both re-emergent and rest tremor.

Disconnected body representation: neuroplasticity following spinal cord injury

Neuroplastic changes in somatotopic organization within the motor and somatosensory systems have long been observed. The interruption of afferent and efferent brain-body pathways promotes extensive cortical reorganization. Changes are majorly related to the typical homuncular organization of sensorimotor areas and specific "somatotopic interferences". Recent findings revealed a relevant peripheral contribution to the plasticity of body representation in addition to the role of sensorimotor cortices.
