acute myocardial infarction

Climate changes and ST-elevation myocardial infarction treated with primary percutaneous coronary angioplasty

Background: The impact of seasonal changes on the incidence of acute myocardial infarction has been incompletely appraised, especially in the modern era of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). We aimed to appraise the overall and season-specific impact of climate changes on the daily rate of PCCI. Methods: Details on PPCI and climate changes were retrospectively collected in three high-volume Italian institutions with different geographical features.

Impact of environmental pollution and weather changes on the incidence of ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Background: Environmental pollution and weather changes unfavorably impact on cardiovascular disease. However, limited research has focused on ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the most severe yet distinctive form of acute coronary syndrome. Methods and results: We appraised the impact of environmental and weather changes on the incidence of STEMI, analysing the bivariate and multivariable association between several environmental and atmospheric parameters and the daily incidence of STEMI in two large Italian urban areas.

Interleukin-1 Blockade Inhibits the Acute Inflammatory Response in Patients With ST-Segment-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Background ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction is associated with an intense acute inflammatory response and risk of heart failure. We tested whether interleukin-1 blockade with anakinra significantly reduced the area under the curve for hsCRP (high sensitivity C-reactive protein) levels during the first 14 days in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (VCUART3 [Virginia Commonwealth University Anakinra Remodeling Trial 3]).

Prognostic value of high-sensitive cardiac troponin I in asymptomatic chronic hemodialysis patients

Introduction: Increased levels of cardiac troponins (cTn) are a hallmark of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), along with symptoms and electrocardiographic (ECG) changes. Stably elevated cTn concentrations are frequently observed in asymptomatic patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and/or on hemodialysis (HD); the meaning of this elevation, as assessed by conventional techniques, remains unclear. Aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical significance of cTnI levels in asymptomatic HD patients by employing a newer high-sensitive cTnI (hs-cTnI) assay.

Use of noninvasive and invasive mechanical ventilation in cardiogenic shock. A prospective multicenter study

Despite scarce data, invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) is widely recommended over non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for ventilatory support in cardiogenic shock (CS). We assessed the real-life use of different ventilation strategies in CS and their influence on outcome focusing on the use of NIV and MV.
