Seismic Risk Assessment of New Zealand Unreinforced Masonry Churches using Statistical Procedures

The 2010–2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence provided extensive evidence of the significant seismic vulnerability of New Zealand unreinforced masonry (URM) churches. Given the high seismicity of the country, the exposure of human lives and the societal significance of ecclesiastic buildings, for both historical and religious reasons, the reduction in seismic vulnerability of this building type is of primary importance.

Diversification in urban functions as a measure of metropolitan complexity

Newly emerging relationships between form and function reveal the increasingly complex nature of metropolitan regions. The present study investigates spatial diversification in settlement forms and socioeconomic functions in metropolitan Attica (the administrative region including Athens, the capital of Greece), with the aim of implementing a holistic framework assessing urban complexity in contemporary cities.

Biaxial bias extension test for pantographic sheets

Pantographic fabrics are emerging in the literature as promising metamaterials. They are made up of two orthogonal families of fibers connected at their intersection points by pivots. Fibers are supposed to be straight in the reference configuration and to store energy while undergoing extension and bending deformations only. Pivots, which oppose to relative rotations of fibers, are supposed to store energy when undergoing torsion, thus to confer shear stiffness at macro level.

Safety and security management through an integrated multidisciplinary model and related integrated technological framework

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a multidisciplinary model for safety and security management (IMMSSM) which can be implemented by means of a suitable Integrated Technological System Framework (ITSF) that can be based on Internet of Things (IoT)/Internet of Everything (IoE), showing also the significant role played by the integration of the elements that compose the model itself, thanks to a proper genetic algorithm studied for the specific context.
