Vapor nucleation paths in lyophobic nanopores

Abstract.: In recent years, technologies revolving around the use of lyophobic nanopores gained considerable attention in both fundamental and applied research. Owing to the enormous internal surface area, heterogeneous lyophobic systems (HLS), constituted by a nanoporous lyophobic material and a non-wetting liquid, are promising candidates for the efficient storage or dissipation of mechanical energy.

Differential inhibitory effect of a pyrazolopyran compound on human serine hydroxymethyltransferase-amino acid complexes

Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is a pivotal enzyme in one-carbon metabolism that catalyses the reversible conversion of serine and tetrahydrofolate into glycine and methylenetetrahydrofolate. It exists in cytosolic (SHMT1) and mitochondrial (SHMT2) isoforms. Research on one-carbon metabolism in cancer cell lines has shown that SHMT1 preferentially catalyses serine synthesis, whereas in mitochondria SHMT2 is involved in serine breakdown. Recent research has focused on the identification of inhibitors that bind at the folate pocket.

Mutational analysis of the cysteine-rich region of the iron-responsive GATA factor Fep1. Role of individual cysteines as [2Fe–2S] cluster ligands

Fep1, the iron-dependent GATA-type transcriptional repressor of the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris, has a dimeric structure and binds an iron–sulfur cluster of the [2Fe–2S] type. In this work, we extend the characterization of this protein by analysis of the optical and CD spectroscopic properties of a set of mutants where cysteines within the conserved Cys-X5-Cys-X8-Cys-X2-Cys motif have been targeted, in order to evaluate their role as [2Fe–2S] ligands.

Benchmarking Geant4 hadronic models for prompt-γ monitoring in carbon ion therapy

Purpose: The real-time monitoring of the spread-out Bragg peak would allow the planned dose delivered during treatment to be directly verified, but this poses a major challenge in modern ion beam therapy. A possible method to achieve this goal is to exploit the production of secondary particles by the nuclear reactions of the beam with the patient and correlate their emission profile to the planned target volume position. In this study, we present both the production rate and energy spectra of the prompt-?

A flow-leak correction algorithm for pneumotachographic work-of-breathing measurement during high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy

Measuring work of breathing (WOB) is an intricate task during high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) ther-
apy because the continuous unidirectional flow toward the patient makes pneumotachography technically
difficult to use. We implemented a new method for measuring WOB based on a differential pneumota-
chography (DP) system, equipped with one pneumotachograph inserted in the HFNC circuit and another
connected to a monitoring facemask, combined with a leak correction algorithm (LCA) that corrects flow

Improved DET communication between cellobiose dehydrogenase and a gold electrode modified with a rigid self-assembled monolayer and a green metal nanoparticles: the role of an ordered nanostructuration

Efficient direct electron transfer (DET) between cellobiose dehydrogenase from Corynascus thermophilus (CtCDH) and a novel gold electrode platform, obtained by covalent linking of green AuNPs and AgNPs modified with a dithiol self-assembled monolayer, consisting of biphenyl-4,4?-dithiol (BPDT), was presented. The green AuNPs and AgNPs were synthesized using quercetin as reducing agent at room temperature. TEM experiments showed that the AuNPs and AgNPs were circular in shape with an average diameter of 5 and 8 nm, respectively.

AuNPs-functionalized PANABA-MWCNTs nanocomposite-based impedimetric immunosensor for 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid detection

In this work, we developed an impedimetric label-free immunosensor for the detection of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxy Acetic Acid (2,4-D) herbicide either in standard solution and spiked real samples. For this purpose, we prepared by electropolymerization a conductive polymer poly-(aniline-co-3-aminobenzoic acid) (PANABA) then we immobilized anti-2,4-D antibody onto a nanocomposite AuNPs-PANABA-MWCNTs employing the carboxylic moieties as anchor sites.

Biophysics and protein corona analysis of Janus cyclodextrin-DNA nanocomplexes. Efficient cellular transfection on cancer cells

The self-assembling processes underlining the capabilities of facially differentiated ("Janus") polycationic amphiphilic cyclodextrins (paCDs) as non-viral gene nanocarriers have been investigated by a pluridisciplinary approach. Three representative Janus paCDs bearing a common tetradecahexanoyl multitail domain at the secondary face and differing in the topology of the cluster of amino groups at the primary side were selected for this study. All of them compact pEGFP-C3 plasmid DNA and promote transfection in HeLa and MCF-7 cells, both in absence and in presence of human serum.
