Focal breast lesion characterization according to the BI-RADS US lexicon: role of a computer-aided decision-making support

The breast imaging-reporting and data system (BI-RADS) lexicon was first developed in 2003 by the American College of Radiology (ACR), in an attempt to standardize image interpretation, reporting and teaching breast imaging, including ultrasound (US) [1]. Despite this validation, the variability in the assessment of focal breast lesions (FBLs) with the use of BI-RADS US lexicon is still an issue, in particular for some of the descriptors, such as margin and echo pattern of lesion.

Adenomyoepithelioma of the breast: case report and literature review

Adenomyoepithelioma are uncommon tumors. The majority of them occur in women in the fifth and sixth decades who usually present with a self-palpated, solitary breast mass or a lesion identified on mammography. We report the case of adenomyoepithelioma of the breast with malignant transformation of both myoepitheliel and epithelial components diagnosed as malignancy during the preoperative stage in a seventy-six year old woman.

Postsurgical ultrasound evaluation of patients with prosthesis in acellular dermal matrix: results from monocentric experience

Mastectomy and breast prosthetic reconstruction is the most common surgical treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer. In the last few years, breast prosthetic augmentation in acellular dermal matrix (ADM) has been introduced. The aim of this study is to present our single-center experience in evaluating the outcome of patients who underwent breast reconstruction in ADM, using ultrasound (US) examination.

The effect of postmastectomy radiation therapy on breast implants. Material analysis on silicone and polyurethane prosthesis

The pathogenic mechanism underlying capsular contracture is still unknown. It is certainly a multifactorial process, resulting from human body reaction, biofilm activation, bacteremic seeding, or silicone exposure. The scope of the present article is to investigate the effect of hypofractionated radiotherapy protocol (2.66 Gy × 16 sessions) both on silicone and polyurethane breast implants.Silicone implants and polyurethane underwent irradiation according to a hypofractionated radiotherapy protocol for the treatment of breast cancer.

Tuberous breast and predisposition to breast deformity in consanguineous

Tuberous breast deformity is a pathologic condition of the breast consisting of a constricting ring at the breast base, reduction in the volume of the breast parenchyma, and herniation of breast tissue through the nipple-areola complex with areola enlargement. This pathology is generally congenital and has an unknown etiopathogenesis. We report the first observation of tuberous breast deformity in consanguineous. This report suggests the potential role of a genetic base in the development of this deformity.
