inURBECitizens: strengthening INtegrated Urban climate Resilience in the Built Environment through multi-objective strategies and Citizens involvement

Cities face major environmental and social challenges, worsened by population growth and climate change. In particular, the urban heat island (UHI) effect can raise temperatures by up to 10°C compared to suburban areas, intensifying heatwaves and disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable. Additionally, climate change has led to more extreme weather events, with heavier rainfall in winter and prolonged droughts in summer.

Subjects, Citizens and Law: Colonial and independent India

How, where, and when do subjects and citizens come into being to make demands and reassert themselves in the formation of modern India? This is the key question for the essays in this book. In unique ways, the authors enquire into the formation of subjects and citizens within the frame of law and negotiation for rights, from the perspective of practice. The question is simple in the abstract. Rights are prescribed by law.

Social media in earthquake-related communication. Shake networks

Social media are playing an increasingly important role during and in the aftermath of natural disasters. Several case studies show how citizens and institutions are using them to spread or gather relevant information, share emotions or support recovery actions. In 2013, Potts defined the role of social media during natural disasters as a ‘largely untapped site of study’ (Potts, 2014, p. 98). Although scholars are now engaging in a growing volume of research in this field, the literature still appears fragmented and overwhelmingly based on single case studies.
