Comparison of phase-field models of fracture coupled with plasticity

In the last few years, several authors have proposed different phase-field models aimed at describing ductile fracture phenomena. Most of these models fall within the class of variational approaches to fracture proposed by Francfort and Marigo [13]. For the case of brittle materials, the key concept due to Griffith consists in viewing crack growth as the result of a competition between bulk elastic energy and surface energy. For ductile materials, however, an additional contribution to the energy dissipation is present, related to plastic deformations.

Preconditioned nonlinear conjugate gradient methods based on a modified secant equation

This paper includes a twofold result for the Nonlinear Conjugate Gradient (NCG) method, in large scale unconstrained optimization. First we consider a theoretical analysis, where preconditioning is embedded in a strong convergence framework of an NCG method from the literature. Mild conditions to be satisfied by the preconditioners are defined, in order to preserve NCG convergence. As a second task, we also detail the use of novel matrix-free preconditioners for NCG.

The Haldane model and its localization dichotomy

Gapped periodic quantum systems exhibit an interesting Localization Dichotomy, which emerges when one looks at the localization of the optimally localized Wannier functions associated to the Bloch bands below the gap. As recently proved, either these Wannier functions are exponentially localized, as it happens whenever the Hamiltonian operator is time-reversal symmetric, or they are delocalized in the sense that the expectation value of |x| 2 diverges. Intermediate regimes are forbidden.

A multi-objective DIRECT algorithm for ship hull optimization

The paper is concerned with black-box nonlinear constrained multi-objective optimization problems. Our interest is the definition of a multi-objective deterministic partition-based algorithm. The main target of the proposed algorithm is the solution of a real ship hull optimization problem. To this purpose and in pursuit of an efficient method, we develop an hybrid algorithm by coupling a multi-objective DIRECT-type algorithm with an efficient derivative-free local algorithm.

KdV-type equations linked via Bäcklund transformations: Remarks and perspectives

Third order nonlinear evolution equations, that is the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV), modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) equation and other ones are considered: they all are connected via Bäcklund transformations. These links can be depicted in a wide Bäcklund Chart which further extends the previous one constructed in [22]. In particular, the Bäcklund transformation which links the mKdV equation to the KdV singularity manifold equation is reconsidered and the nonlinear equation for the KdV eigenfunction is shown to be linked to all the equations in the previously constructed Bäcklund Chart.

A differential model for growing sandpiles on networks

We consider a system of differential equations of Monge–Kantorovich type which describes the equilibrium configurations of granular material poured by a constant source on a network. Relying on the definition of viscosity solution for Hamilton–Jacobi equations on networks introduced in [P.-L. Lions and P. E. Souganidis, Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei Rend. Lincei Mat. Appl., 27 (2016), pp. 535–545], we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of the system and we discuss its numerical approximation. Some numerical experiments are carried out.

Long-term capture orbits for low-energy space missions

This research aims at ascertaining the existence and characteristics of natural long-term capture orbits around a celestial body of potential interest. The problem is investigated in the dynamical framework of the three-dimensional circular restricted three-body problem. Previous numerical work on two-dimensional trajectories provided numerical evidence of Conley’s theorem, proving that long-term capture orbits are topologically located near trajectories asymptotic to periodic libration point orbits. This work intends to extend the previous investigations to three-dimensional paths.

Steady-state performance of an adaptive combined MISO filter using the multichannel affine projection algorithm

The combination of adaptive filters is an effective approach to improve filtering performance. In this paper, we investigate the performance of an adaptive combined scheme between two adaptive multiple-input single-output (MISO) filters, which can be easily extended to the case of multiple outputs. In order to generalize the analysis, we consider the multichannel affine projection algorithm (APA) to update the coefficients of the MISO filters, which increases the possibility of exploiting the capabilities of the filtering scheme.

Time-domain magnetic shielding effectiveness of planar stratified shields

The shielding effectiveness of a planar multilayered screen is computed in the time domain in the presence of near-field magnetic sources. The proposed numerical method involves the efficient evaluation of classical Sommerfeld integrals and the inverse-Fourier transform through double-exponential formulas. For sufficiently thin screens with highly-conductive properties, an analytical method, based on a modified Cagniard-de Hoop approach, is also presented to validate the results.
