Stable or able? Effect of virtual reality stimulation on static balance of post-stroke patients and healthy subjects

Over the last decades, virtual reality (VR) emerged as a potential tool for developing new rehabilitation treatments in neurological patients. However, despite the increasing number of studies, a clear comprehension about the impact of immersive VR-treatment on balance and posture is still scarce. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of VR cues on balance performances of subjects affected by stroke, age-matched healthy subjects, and young healthy subjects.

Identification of MT-45 metabolites: in silico prediction, in vitro incubation with rat hepatocytes and in vivo confirmation

MT-45 is a synthetic opioid with a pharmacological activity comparable to morphine and it has been involved in intoxications and fatalities reported in Europe and in USA. It was recently subject to control measures, but to date the metabolic pathways of the substance are still unknown. Using rat hepatocytes and LC-HRMS, 14 novel Phase I and II MT-45 metabolites were identified, products of monohydroxylation, dihydroxylation and N-dealkylation; glucuronide conjugation of mono- and dihydroxylated metabolites also occurred.

Natural modulators of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: mode of action analysis and in silico ADME-Tox prediction

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered to be the most common chronic liver disease. The discovery of natural product-based NAFLD modulators requires a more comprehensive study of their modes of action (MoAs). In this study we analysed available in the literature data for 26 naturally-derived compounds associated with experimental evidence for NAFLD alleviation and outlined potential biomolecular targets and a network of pharmacological MoAs for 12 compounds with the highest number of experimentally supported MoA key events, modulated by them.

Evidences of copper nanoparticle exposure in indoor environments: Long-term assessment, high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy evaluation, in silico respiratory dosimetry study and possible health implications

A variety of appliances operated by brush electric motors, widely used in indoor environments, emit nanoparticles (NPs). Due to electric arc discharge during the operation of such motors, some NPs contain copper (Cu). Their dimensions are the same of those found in brain tissue samples by other authors who speculated their possible translocation to brain through olfactory bulb. Cu has been reported to play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Thus, the present study was performed to 1.

Lattice spin simulations of low power photonic liquid-crystal devices

We have performed a detailed Monte Carlo study of photonic devices based on nematic liquid crystal infiltrated in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and in Silicon-Organic Hybrid (SOH) channels, to be used as waveguides. The simulations of a simple model of these slot waveguide shifters have shown the effect of an applied electric external field in two cases with different surface alignments, i.e. planar SOH and homeotropic PDMS. We have investigated the effect of the external field on the optical transmission and the ordering across the cell.
