Curcumin dietary supplementation ameliorates disease phenotype in an animal model of Huntington's disease

Huntington's disease (HD) has traditionally been described as a disorder purely of the brain, however evidence indicates that peripheral abnormalities are also commonly seen. Among others, severe unintended body weight loss represents a prevalent and often debilitating feature of HD pathology, with no therapies available. It correlates with disease progression and significantly affects the quality of life of HD patients.

Anti-Viral Potential and Modulation of Nrf2 by Curcumin: Pharmacological Implications

Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is an essential transcription factor that maintains the cell's redox balance state and reduces inflammation in different adverse stresses. Under the oxidative stress, Nrf2 is separated from Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), which is a key sensor of oxidative stress, translocated to the nucleus, interacts with the antioxidant response element (ARE) in the target gene, and then activates the transcriptional pathway to ameliorate the cellular redox condition.

Graphene oxide coatings prevent Candida albicans biofilm formation with a controlled release of curcumin-loaded nanocomposites

Aim: Fabrication of graphene oxide (GO)-based medical devices coatings that limit adhesion of Candida albicans, a main issue of healthcare-associated infections. Methods: The GO composites noncovalently functionalized with curcumin (CU), a hydrophobic molecule with active antimicrobial action, polyethylene glycol (PEG) that hinders the absorption of biomolecules or a combination of CU and PEG (GO-CU-PEG) were drop-casted on surfaces and antifungal efficacy was assessed. Results: We demonstrate that GO-CU-PEG coatings can reduce fungal adhesion, proliferation and biofilm formation.

Novel therapeutic delivery of Nanocurcumin in central nervous system related disorders

Nutraceuticals represent complementary or alternative beneficial products to the expensive and high-tech therapeutic tools in modern medicine. Nowadays, their medical or health benefits in preventing or treating different types of diseases is widely accepted, due to fewer side effects than synthetic drugs, improved bioavailability and long half-life. Among herbal and natural compounds, curcumin is a very attractive herbal supplement considering its multipurpose properties.

In this work we used a combination of different techniques to investigate the adsorption properties of curcumin by zeolite type A for potential use as an anticancer drug carrier. Curcumin is a natural water-insoluble drug that has attracted great attention in recent years due to its potential anticancer effect in suppressing many types of cancers, while showing a synergistic antitumor effect with other anticancer agents. The ability of synthetic zeolites to encapsulate and deliver the bioactive compound curcumin, which is well-known for its therapeutic effects, is investigated. Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric, is a water-insoluble compound that has attracted great attention in recent years because of its anti-inflammatory properties and anticancer activity. In our research, we use different types of zeolites (LTA and FAU) for loading of curcumin.
