The essential oil (EO), the methanolic (MeOH), and the 70% ethanolic (70% EtOH) extracts obtained from the aerial parts of Ocimum campechianum Mill. (Ecuador) were chemically characterized through gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detector (GC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array-mass spectrometry detectors (HPLC-DAD-MS) and studied for their in vitro biological activity.
A series of novel 2-substituted quinoline-4-carboxylic acids was synthesized by Doebner reaction starting from freely available protocatechuic aldehyde and vanillin precursors. Human dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (hDHODH) was recognised as a clear molecular target for these heterocycles. All compounds were also tested for their antiproliferative potential against three cancer cells (MCF-7, A549, A375) and one normal cell line (HaCaT) to evaluate the selective cytotoxicity.
Resveratrol, a natural product with well-known multiple beneficial effects, has been widely used as a bioactive principle for the development of anti-aging topical phytoproducts. These products are usually applied to skin that is often exposed to solar light for a long time, leading to potentially harmful resveratrol derivatives. In this study we investigated the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of 2,4,6-trihydroxyphenanthrene (THP), derived from trans-resveratrol photochemical isomerization and electrocyclization.
Corynebacterium jeikeium is a commensal bacterium that colonizes human skin, and it is part of the normal bacterial flora. In non-risk subjects, it can be the cause of bad body smell due to the generation of volatile odorous metabolites, especially in the wet parts of the body that this bacterium often colonizes (i.e., groin and axillary regions). Importantly, in the last few decades, there have been increasing cases of serious infections provoked by this bacterium, especially in immunocompromised or hospitalized patients who have undergone installation of prostheses or catheters.
We recently described the CD56lowCD16low subset of Natural Killer (NK) cells that both mediate cytotoxic activity and produce IFN?, being more abundant in bone marrow (BM) than in peripheral blood (PB) of pediatric normal subjects. Given the multifunctional properties of this subset, we examined its development and functional recovery in a cohort of children undergoing ?/? T-cell depleted HLA-haploidentical haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
Antioxidants are helpful in prevention of several diseases related with oxidative stress including neurodegenerative disorders. In recent studies, carbazoles were given proof of promising antioxidant activities. In this article, 9-ethyl-9H-carbazole hydrazone derivatives were synthesized, characterized and their invitroantioxidant activity and possible cytotoxic effects were investigated. Furthermore, protective effect of the synthesized derivatives against amyloid β-induced damage in PC12 neuronal cells was examined by using MTT assay.
Multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer cells is often associated with overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, including P-glycoprotein (P-gp/ABCB1), multidrug resistance-associated protein 1 (MRP1/ABCC1) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP/ABCG2). Modulators of these transporters might be helpful in overcoming MDR. Moreover, exploiting collateral sensitivity (CS) could be another approach for efficient treatment of cancer.
This study reports the synthesis of new 2H-chromene or coumarin based acylhydrazones, which were evaluated for their in vitro antimycobacterial activity against reference strain Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and compared to the first-line antituberculosis drugs, isoniazid (INH) and ethambutol (EMB). The most active compounds 7m (MIC 0.13 mu M), 7o (MIC 0.15 mu M) and 7k (MIC 0.17 mu M) demonstrated antimycobacterial activity at submicromolar concentration level and remarkably minimal associated cytotoxicity in the human embryonic kidney cell line HEK-293T.
We designed and synthesised novel N-substituted 1,3-thiazolidin-4-one derivatives for the evaluation of their anti-Toxoplasma gondii efficacy. This scaffold was functionalised both at the N1-hydrazine portion with three structurally different moieties and at the lactam nitrogen with substituted benzyl groups selected on the basis of our previous structure-activity relationships studies. Using three different assay methods, the compounds were assessed in vitro to determine both the levels of efficacy against the tachyzoites of T.
