Postmortem computed tomography angiography (PMCTA) and traditional autopsy in cases of sudden cardiac death due to coronary artery disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Introduction: Several studies have been performed to assess the efficacy of postmortem computed tomography angiography (PMCTA) in solving cases of sudden cardiac death, even in comparison with the traditional autopsy. However, the results were often inconsistent and inconclusive. Therefore, a global discussion on the subject through a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis is necessary. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed was performed up to April 23, 2018.

Major infections after bypass surgery and stenting for multivessel coronary disease in the randomised SYNTAX trial

Aims: Incidence, associated risk factors and impact on mortality of infections after bypass surgery (CABG) and stenting (PCI) for multivessel coronary disease (MVD) have never been reported in a large randomised trial. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, in patients with MVD, the prevalence of major infections after PCI and CABG and to assess their impact on mortality. Methods and results: The SYNTAX trial randomised 1,800 MVD patients to either CABG or PCI. Patients were followed up to five years.

Death due to external compression of the trachea in a patient with multinodular hemorrhagic goiter

In this paper we describe the case of an 81-year-old Caucasian female (142 cm tall, weighing 45 kg) who suffered from a multinodular goiter for approximately 40 years. Following the onset of a clinical condition characterized by acute respiratory failure, she was transported to the emergency room by ambulance, where she died within a few hours after admission.

Clinical Course and Quality of Life in High-Risk Patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators

Background: High-risk patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are identified by contemporary risk stratification and effectively treated with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). However, long-term HCM clinical course after ICD therapy for ventricular tachyarrhythmias is incompletely understood. Methods and Results: Cohort of 486 high-risk HCM patients with ICDs was assembled from 8 international centers. Clinical course and device interventions were addressed, and survey questionnaires assessed patient anxiety level and psychological well-being related to ICD therapy.

Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death: Focus on the Subcutaneous Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator

The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is the most effective therapy to prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD) in high-risk patients. To overcome infections and failure of transvenous leads, the most frightening complications of conventional ICDs, a completely subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) has been developed and is currently adopted in routine clinical practice.

Clinical outcomes in adult athletes with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: A 7-year follow-up study

Objective Current guidelines recommend precautionary disqualification from competitive sports in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We assessed the incidence of cardiovascular events in a cohort of patients with HCM engaged in long-term exercise programmes and competitive sport. Methods We reviewed data on 88 consecutive athletes diagnosed with HCM, from 1997 to 2017; 92 male, 98 Caucasian, median age 31 (IQR: 19-44) years. All participated in regular exercise programmes and competitive sport at study entry. We performed follow-up evaluation after 7±5 (1-21) years.

Prognostic value of decreased peripheral congestion detected by Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis (BIVA) in patients hospitalized for acute heart failure. BIVA prognostic value in acute heart failure

Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the prognostic role of quantitative reduction of congestion during hospitalization assessed by Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis (BIVA) serial evaluations in patients admitted for acute heart failure (AHF).

Phenotypic effects of chronic and acute use of methiopropamine in a mouse model

Methiopropamine (MPA) is a structural analogue of methamphetamine and belongs to the category of the novel psychoactive substances. To the best of our knowledge, no experimental study has been performed to evaluate the organ damage evoked by MPA administration in an animal model. Therefore, the main purpose of the present study was to investigate the histological changes in CD-1 male mice following the chronic administration of MPA.
