Comparison of high intensity focused ultrasound and radioiodine for treating toxic thyroid nodules

Purpose: We compared the effectiveness of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and radioiodine (RAI) to treat patients carrying toxic thyroid nodule (TTN). Normalization of serum thyrotropin (TSH) 1 year after treatment was the primary end-point; concurrent changes in nodules' volume and scintigraphic pattern were also evaluated as secondary end-points.

Collaterals management during pancreatoduodenectomy in patients with celiac axis stenosis. A systematic review of the literature

Background/Objectives: Celiac axis stenosis (CAS) represents an uncommon and typically innocuous condition. However, when a pancreatic resection is required, a high risk for upper abdominal organs ischemia is observed. In presence of collaterals, such a risk is minimized if their preservation is realized. The aim of the present study is to systematically review the literature with the intent to address the routine management of collateral arteries in the case of CAS patients requiring pancreatoduodenectomy.

Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and 3 years after delivery in women with gestational hyperglycemia

Aims: Women with gestational hyperglycemia commonly experience hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. More information is needed about how hypertension develops in these patients over time. We investigated the prevalence of hypertension during and 3 years after pregnancy in Caucasian women with gestational hyperglycemia. We also investigated metabolic syndrome presence, glucose tolerance status, insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion levels in the follow-up period.

Functional imaging in the follow-up of enteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: Clinical usefulness and indications

CONTEXT:
Functional imaging tests (FITs) detecting somatostatin receptor expression [i.e., somatostatin receptor scintigraphy, 68Ga-DOTA positron emission tomography/computed tomography (CT)] have a pivotal role in the diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), although their indication during follow-up still needs to be clarified.
OBJECTIVE:
Investigate the role of FITs after diagnosis of metastatic enteropancreatic NETs, identifying patients who might benefit from these exams.
DESIGN:

Olive polyphenol effects in a mouse model of chronic ethanol addiction

Objectives Alcohol addiction elicits oxidative imbalance and it is well known that polyphenols possess antioxidant properties. We investigated whether or not polyphenols could confer a protective potential against alcohol-induced oxidative stress. Methods We administered (per os) for two months 20 mg/kg of olive polyphenols containing mostly hydroxytyrosol in alcoholic adult male mice.
