Vitamin B6 and Diabetes: Relationship and Molecular Mechanisms

Vitamin B6 is a cofactor for approximately 150 reactions that regulate the metabolism of glucose, lipids, amino acids, DNA, and neurotransmitters. In addition, it plays the role of antioxidant by counteracting the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). Epidemiological and experimental studies indicated an evident inverse association between vitamin B6 levels and diabetes, as well as a clear protective effect of vitamin B6 on diabetic complications.

Effect of glucose on liposome–plasma protein interactions: relevance for the physiological response of clinically approved liposomal formulations

Recently, the concept is emerging that the reduced success of nanoparticles in clinical practice is due to the adsorption of the “biomolecular corona (BC),” which alters their biological identity. Apart from protein variations, alterations in the human metabolome may change the BC decoration, which has poorly been addressed so far. Here, glucose is used as a model metabolite and how the interactions between liposomes (as a model nanoparticle) and plasma proteins are influenced by normal and diabetic sugar blood levels is explored.

Evaluation of different decellularization protocols on the generation of pancreas-derived hydrogels

Different approaches have investigated the effects of different extracellular matrices (ECMs) and three-dimensional (3D) culture on islet function, showing encouraging results. Ideally, the proper scaffold should mimic the biochemical composition of the native tissue as it drives numerous signaling pathways involved in tissue homeostasis and functionality. Tissue-derived decellularized biomaterials can preserve the ECM composition of the native tissue making it an ideal scaffold for 3D tissue engineering applications.

Background: Sex and gender-related factors have been under-investigated as relevant determinants of health outcomes across non-communicable chronic diseases. Differential involvement of myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers in painful diabetic polyneuropathy

Introduction We aimed at evaluating the differential involvement of large myelinated Aβ‐fibers, small myelinated Aδ‐ and unmyelinated C‐fibers in patients with diabetic polyneuropathy and how they contribute to neuropathic pain.
Methods We collected clinical and diagnostic test variables in 133 consecutive patients with diabetic polyneuropathy. All patients underwent Aβ‐fiber mediated nerve conduction study, Aδ‐fiber mediated laser‐evoked potentials and skin biopsy mainly assessing unmyelinated C‐fibers.

Mangosteen Extract Shows a Potent Insulin Sensitizing Effect in Obese Female Patients: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Pilot Study.

There is a widely acknowledged association between insulin resistance and obesity/type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and insulin sensitizing treatments have proved effective in preventing diabetes and inducing weight loss. Proper evaluation of polyphenols intake at the population level is a necessary step in order to establish possible associations with health outcomes. Available data are limited, and so far no study has been performed in people with diabetes. The aim of this work was to document the intake of polyphenols and their major food sources in a cohort of people with type 2 diabetes and in socio-demographic subgroups.

Circulating MicroRNAs in Elderly Type 2 Diabetic Patients

The circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in elderly patients are still being defined. To identify novel miRNA biomarker candidates for monitoring responses to sitagliptin in such patients, we prospectively studied 40 T2D patients (age > 65) with HbA1c levels of 7.5–9.0% on metformin. After collection of baseline blood samples (t0), the dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitor (DPP-IVi) sitagliptin was added to the metformin regimen, and patients were followed for 15 months.
