Echocardiography and orrection of mitral regurgitation. an unbreakable link

Degenerative mitral valve (MV) disease causing mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most common organic valve pathology and is classified based on leaflet motion. MV repair is indicated as the preferred technique (Class I indication) when the results are expected to be durable. Therefore, a detailed and systematic evaluation of MV apparatus is pivotal in allowing the proper surgical planning, as well as the screening for trans catheter-based treatment when surgery is not indicated.

Interplay between Nox2 Activity and Platelet Activation in Patients with Sepsis and Septic Shock: A Prospective Study

Background. Although preclinical studies highlighted the potential role of NADPH oxidase (NOX) in sepsis, only few studies evaluated the oxidative stress in patients with sepsis and septic shock. The objective of the study is to appraise the oxidative stress status and platelet function in patients with sepsis and septic shock compared to healthy controls. Methods and Results. Patients with sepsis or septic shock admitted to the hospital Policlinico Umberto I (Sapienza University, Rome) underwent a blood sample collection within 1 hour from admission.

Reference values of left heart echocardiographic dimensions and mass in male peri-pubertal athletes

Background: Several articles have proposed reference values in healthy paediatric subjects, but none of them has evaluated a large population of healthy trained adolescents. Design: The study purpose was to establish normal echocardiographic measurements of left heart (aortic root, left atrium and left ventricular dimensions and mass) in relation to age, weight, height, body mass index, body surface area and training hours in this specific population.

Assessment of biventricular function by three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography in adolescents and young adults with human immunodeficiency virus infection. a pilot study.

Background. The purpose of the study was to assess biventricular parameters of wall deformation with three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (3DSTE) in adolescents and young adults with human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) on antiretroviral therapy in order to detect a possible subclinical myocardial dysfunction. Methods. Twenty-one patients aged 12 to 39years with HIV, 21 normal controls of the same age and sex, and 21 patients with idiopathic non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) were studied with 3DSTE.

The miniaturization of ultrasound equipment in the form of tablet-or smartphone-sized ultrasound equipment is a result of the rapid evolution of technology and handheld ultrasound devices (HHUSD). This position paper of the European Federation of Societies in Ultrasound and Medicine (EFSUMB) assesses the current status of HHUSD in abdominal ultrasound, pediatric ultrasound, targeted echocardiography and heart ultrasound, and we will report position comments on the most common clinical applications.

Impact of predilation Before transcatheter aortic valve implantation with new-generation devices

Background: Significant aortic stenosis can be effectively treated with transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in patients at high or intermediate surgical risk. Predilation is often performed to facilitate TAVI implantation, but its risk-benefit balance with new-generation devices is detabed. We aimed to appraise whether predilation is still needed with new-generation devices for TAVI.

Multimodality Imaging in the diagnostic work-up of endocarditis and cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious cardiac condition, which includes a wide range of clinical presentations, with varying degrees of severity. The diagnosis is multifactorial and a proper characterization of disease requires the identification of the primary site of infection (usually the cardiac valve) and the search of secondary systemic complications. Early depiction of local complications or distant embolization has a great impact on patient management and prognosis, as it may induce to aggressive antibiotic treatment or, in more advanced cases, cardiac surgery.
