Deregulated expression of VHL mRNA variants in papillary thyroid cancer

Recent findings demonstrated that a subset of papillary thyroid cancers (PTCs) is characterized by reduced expression of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene, and that lowest levels associated with more aggressive PTCs. In the present study, the levels of the two VHL mRNA splicing variants, VHL-213 (V1) and VHL-172 (V2), were measured in a series of 96 PTC and corresponding normal matched tissues by means of quantitative RT-PCR. Variations in the mRNA levels were correlated with patients' clinicopathological parameters and disease-free interval (DFI).

Olive polyphenol effects in a mouse model of chronic ethanol addiction

Objectives Alcohol addiction elicits oxidative imbalance and it is well known that polyphenols possess antioxidant properties. We investigated whether or not polyphenols could confer a protective potential against alcohol-induced oxidative stress. Methods We administered (per os) for two months 20 mg/kg of olive polyphenols containing mostly hydroxytyrosol in alcoholic adult male mice.

Identification and characterization of prokineticin receptor 2 splicing variant and its modulation in an animal model of alzheimer's disease

Prokineticin 2 is a peptide that is widely distributed in the nervous system and influences a variety of brain functions, such as pain, food intake and circadian rhythms. We previously demonstrated that, in the animal model of Alzheimer’s disease, induced by the intracerebroventricular administration of Aβ1-42, there is a modulation of the prokineticin system in rat hippocampus.

Faecal corticosterone metabolite assessment in socially housed male and female wistar rats

Knowledge of animals’ hormonal status is important for conservation studies in wild or semi-free-ranging conditions as well as for behavioural and clinical experiments conducted in laboratory research, mostly performed on rats and mice. Faecal sampling is a useful non-invasive method to obtain steroid hormone assessments. Nevertheless, in laboratory studies, unlike other contexts, faecal sampling is less utilised. One of the issues raised is the necessity to collect samples belonging to different animals, separately.

Glucocorticoid interactions with the dorsal striatal endocannabinoid system in regulating inhibitory avoidance memory

The endocannabinoid (eCB) system is highly stress sensitive and known to modulate memory formation of emotionally arousing experiences across different corticolimbic structures. eCB signaling within these circuits is also essentially involved in regulating non-genomically mediated glucocorticoid hormone effects on memory.

Profiling of selenium absorption and accumulation in healthy subjects after prolonged l-selenomethionine supplementation

PURPOSE:
Autoimmune thyroiditis and its complications for the reproductive system are a growing problem. Selenium is a common ingredient in numerous food supplements recommended for thyroiditis and pregnancy. A fast, simple method to measure serum selenium concentration will improve knowledge of its pharmacokinetics and toxicity.
AIM:
To validate a useful method to measure serum selenium concentration and to study selenium absorption and accumulation in a prospective interventional study of prolonged treatment.
