Impact of environmental factors on stilbene biosynthesis

Stilbenes are a small family of polyphenolic secondary metabolites that can be found in several distantly related plant species. These compounds act as phytoalexins, playing a crucial role in plant defense against phytopathogens, as well as being involved in the adaptation of plants to abiotic environmental factors. Among stilbenes, trans-resveratrol is certainly the most popular and extensively studied for its health properties. In recent years, an increasing number of stilbene compounds were subjected to investigations concerning their bioactivity.

Polymyalgia rheumatica and diverticular disease: just two distinct age-related disorders or more? Results from a case-control study

In a previous report of two married cohabiting couples affected by polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), we noticed that the wife of one couple and both members of the other couple suffered from symptomatic diverticular disease (DD), whose diagnosis was made before the onset of PMR. We investigated whether DD might be a risk factor for the development of PMR. We conducted a case-control study informed on a database containing the prospectively collected medical records of consecutive PMR patients.

Smoke tests of natural esters and mineral oils under trasformer fire conditions

In the framework of the activities of the Italian Institutional Working Group on Natural Esters, smoke production under controlled fire conditions of such innovative insulating liquids has been studied in comparison with that released by traditional mineral oil, normally used in electrical power transformers. This comparison has been made in terms of solid particulates, carbon monoxide (CO), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Aldehydes in different conditions of greater or lower presence of atmospheric oxygen.

The use of local materials for low-energy service buildings in touristic island: The case study of Favignana island

Energy sustainability of new service buildings should considers the use of envelope materials able to minimize thermal dispersions avoiding at the same time environmental and landscaping impacts specially in the small islands of Mediterranean sea generally characterized by high environmental and landscaping values. In this context, the paper provides an analysis of local materials for the design of low-energy service buildings in touristic islands, according with the concept of re-use.

Emerging trends in entrepreneurial universities within Mediterranean regions: an international comparison

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to investigate the new role that universities are assuming as entrepreneurial entities supporting the development of regional innovation systems through an international comparison, in order to address the demand for global competitiveness. The purpose of this paper is to compare how some universities of the Mediterranean area and of South-East Asia conceive and implement an entrepreneurial culture through their curricula, conducting a two-way comparison between Italy and Singapore.

An analysis of the noise pollution influence on the housing prices in the central area of the city of Bari

With reference to the European goals concerning the noise pollution control, the present research aims at verifying the existence and, eventually, determining the influence level of the acoustic component on the selling prices in the residential segment. The analysis has been contextualized to the city of Bari (Southern Italy) and the study sample concerns one-hundred residential units recently sold, for which the main influencing factors in the selling price formation processes have been identified.
