The social and the ordinary

The article examines an exchange between Elizabeth Povinelli and Veena Das over the role of the ordinary. They both argue that we can situate social worlds in the ordinary and daily lives of people shaped by micro or quasi events. This minute texture of living makes it difficult or actually impossible, though, to sort out events that call forth criticism and political action. Following Stanley Cavell’s lead, the article suggests how life described under the signature sign of the uneventful may be a proper place for envisaging when the need for criticism and change is called forth.

Il ritorno all’ordinario, la trasformazione dell’etica e la cura.

In her recent Etica e politica dell’ordinario (2015), Sandra Laugier has developed an interesting reconceptualization of ethics as connected to the ordinary dimensions of our lives, understood mainly in terms of ordinary language. The paper aims at showing the richness of such a proposal, mostly in relation to the transformation it offers of the well known paradigm of care ethics. A few critical remarks are offered in the conclusion.

From ‘good’ intentions to principled practices and beyond: ethical issues in risk communication

This chapter summarizes and critically addresses the evolution of risk communication approaches through the
lens of ethical issues. The growth and the consolidation of risk communication as an independent, cross-cutting
discipline appear to be strictly connected to the growing concern for both public’s and individual recipients’
needs and rights.

Unravelling the Scientific Debate on How to Address Wolf-Dog Hybridization in Europe

Anthropogenic hybridization is widely perceived as a threat to the conservation of biodiversity. Nevertheless, to date, relevant policy and management interventions are unresolved and highly convoluted. While this is due to the inherent complexity of the issue, we hereby hypothesize that a lack of agreement concerning management goals and approaches, within the scientific community, may explain the lack of social awareness on this phenomenon, and the absence of effective pressure on decision-makers.

A new Italian manifesto against racism

As an interdisciplinary team that includes biological and cultural anthropologists, we have issued a manifesto for education in human diversity and unity (see go.nature.com/2sc1eoj). This aims to counteract our country’s current surge in racism and intolerance, and will help students to develop a more open attitude (see go.nature.com/2xch3ns). The manifesto opposes the racist manifesto of 1938, originally signed by ten Italian scientists.

From asilomar to genome editing. Research ethics and models of decision

The aim of the presentation is to focus on the differences between two scientific contexts: the genetic engineering context of the 1970s, with specific attention paid to the use of the recombinant DNA technique to generate genetically modified molecules, and the current genome editing context, with specific attention paid to the use of CRISPR-Cas9 technology to modify human germline cells genetically.
