Neuroblastoma-secreted exosomes carrying miR‐375 promote osteogenic differentiation of bone-marrow mesenchymal stromal cells

Bone marrow (BM) is the major target organ for neuroblastoma (NB) metastasis and its involvement is associated with poor outcome. Yet, the mechanism by which NB cells invade BM is largely unknown. Tumour microenvironment represents a key element in tumour progression and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been recognized as a fundamental part of the associated tumour stroma. Here, we show that BM-MSCs isolated from NB patients with BM involvement exhibit a greater osteogenic potential than MSCs from non-infiltrated BM.

Proteomic profiling of retinoblastoma-derived exosomes reveals potential biomarkers of vitreous seeding

Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common tumor of the eye in early childhood. Although recent advances in conservative treatment have greatly improved the visual outcome, local tumor control remains difficult in the presence of massive vitreous seeding. Traditional biopsy has long been considered unsafe in RB, due to the risk of extraocular spread. Thus, the identification of new biomarkers is crucial to design safer diagnostic and more effective therapeutic approaches.

The biological mechanisms of action of cardiac progenitor cell therapy

Purpose of Review: Cell therapy for cardiovascular diseases is regarded as a rapidly growing field within regenerative medicine. Different cellular populations enriched for cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs), or derivate a-cellular products, are currently under preclinical and clinical evaluation. Here, we have reviewed the described mechanisms whereby resident post-natal CPCs, isolated in different ways, act as a therapeutic product on the damaged myocardium.

Glial phenotype induction of neural stem progenitor cells using astrocyte-derived exosomes

Exosomes, small vescicles with a lipid bilayer, are released from many cell types and are part of the cell secretrome that can play a role in intercellular communication. They originate from cytoplasmic multivescicular bodies, fuse with the plasma membrane and release their content of lipids, proteins and RNAs in the extracellular space or in target cells. A growing body of evidence suggests that exosomes contribute to many aspects of healthy and pathological cells, and they may influence the homeostasis of target cells.

Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is marked by progressive cognitive and functional impairment believed to reflect synaptic and neuronal loss. Recent preclinical data suggests that lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated microglia may contribute to the elimination of viable neurons and synapses by promoting a neurotoxic astrocytic phenotype, defined as A1. The innate immune cells, including microglia and astrocytes, can either facilitate or inhibit neuroinflammation in response to peripherally applied inflammatory stimuli, such as LPS.

Laser Transmission Spectroscopy (LTS) is a relatively new technique capable of rapidly determining the size, shape, refractive index and number of meso- and nano-particles in colloidal suspensions. This technique relies on the measurement of the transmission of laser light through the sample as a function of wavelength (using a tunable laser). The measured extinction is then  inverted  to obtain the particle size distribution as well as information about particles shape,  structure (for example,  the presence of shells) and refractive index.
