False Positive Reactions

Detection of SARS-COV N2 Gene: Very low amounts of viral RNA or false positive?

Background: The detection of a low amount of viral RNA is crucial to identify a SARS-CoV-2 positive individual harboring a low level of virus, especially during the convalescent period. However, the detection of one gene at high Cycle threshold (Ct) has to be interpreted with caution. In this study we address this specific issue and report our real-life experience. Study design: A total of 1639 nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) were analyzed with Xpert® Xpress SARS-CoV-2.

Calcitonin in thyroid and extra-thyroid neuroendocrine neoplasms: The two-faced Janus

An increased calcitonin serum level is suggestive of a medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), but is not pathognomonic. The possibility of false positives or other calcitonin-secreting neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) should be considered. Serum calcitonin levels are generally assessed by immunoradiometric and chemiluminescent assays with high sensitivity and specificity; however, slightly moderately elevated levels could be attributable to various confounding factors.

Detection of Crohn’s disease with diffusion images versus contrast-enhanced images in pediatric using MR enterography with histopathological correlation

The purpose of this study was to determine whether MRE performed with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequences is comparable to contrast-enhanced MRE in the detection of active small-bowel inflammation in pediatric patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). We included in our study 68 patients with diagnosis of CD between April 2015 and June 2018 that underwent MRE examination. Examination protocol includes coronal and axial FISP, T2-w half-Fourier RARE and DWI sequences, a baseline coronal T1-w fat-saturated ultrafast (GRE) sequence followed by contrast 3D T1-w GRE.
