Optimization of enzyme-assisted extraction of flavonoids from corn husks

Corn husks are an important byproduct of the corn processing industry. Although they are a rich source of bioactive compounds, especially flavonoids, corn husks are usually disposed of or used as animal feed. In this paper, we investigate their recovery by an enzyme-assisted extraction process consisting of a pretreatment of the plant material with cellulase followed by solvent extraction with aqueous ethanol.

Dietary flavonoids: Nano delivery and nanoparticles for cancer therapy

Application of nanotechnologies to cancer therapy might increase solubility and/or bioavailability of bioactive compounds of natural or synthetic origin and offers other potential benefits in cancer therapy, including selective targeting. In the present review we aim to evaluate in vivo studies on the anticancer activity of nanoparticles (NPs) obtained from food-derived flavonoids. From a systematic search a total of 60 studies were identified.

Novel approaches to the discovery of selective human monoamine oxidase-B inhibitors: is there room for improvement?

Introduction: Selective monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitors are currently used as coadjuvants for the treatment of early motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. They can, based on their chemical structure and mechanism of inhibition, be categorized into reversible and irreversible agents. Secondary metabolites of Tilia tomentosa Moench inflorescences collected in Central Italy: chemotaxonomy relevance and phytochemical rationale of traditional use

In this paper, the phytochemical analysis on the inflorescences (flowers and bracts) of a sample of Tilia tomentosa collected from an isolated population in Central Italy, was reported for the first time. Thirteen compounds (oleanolic acid, maslinic acid, apigenin, luteolin, kaempferol, quercetin, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, rutin, tiliroside, ellagic acid, shikimic acid and quinic acid), belonging to several different classes of natural products, were identified on the basis of spectroscopic and spectrometric analysis.

Iridoid glycosides and polyphenolic compounds from teucrium chamaedrys L.

In this work, the phytochemical analysis of Teucrium chamaedrys L. collected in Italy was reported. Eight compounds were isolated and identified by means of classical column chromatography and spectroscopic techniques, such as NMR and MS. Atriplex mollis desf. Aerial parts: extraction procedures, secondary metabolites and color analysis

A method using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode array detector was proposed for the rapid characterization of different phenolic constituents from the extracts of Atriplex mollis aerial parts. Atriplex species are known for their multiple biological activities, but no information is available in the literature about A. mollis. With the aim to firstly characterize the main secondary metabolites of this plant, so as to orient better the biological evaluation, we applied three different extraction procedures and compared the chromatographic results.

Dietary intake and major food sources of polyphenols in people with type 2 diabetes. The TOSCA.IT study

Proper evaluation of polyphenols intake at the population level is a necessary step in order to establish possible associations with health outcomes. Available data are limited, and so far no study has been performed in people with diabetes. The aim of this work was to document the intake of polyphenols and their major food sources in a cohort of people with type 2 diabetes and in socio-demographic subgroups.
