A simple method for measuring fungal metabolic quotient and comparing carbon use efficiency of different isolates. Application to Mediterranean leaf litter fungi

The metabolic efficiency of different microbial groups in carbon source uses and single species storage efficiency is poorly characterized and not adequately represented in most biogeochemical models. It it is proposed here a simple approach for an estimation of the metabolic quotient of fungal isolates. The method is based on the values of substrate use (respiration) and growth (biomass production) obtainable for single fungal isolates in vitro using the Phenotype MicroArray™ system to test the metabolic performance of fungi on different substrates.

Functional indicators of response mechanisms to nitrogen deposition, ozone, and their interaction in two Mediterranean tree species

The effects of nitrogen (N) deposition, tropospheric ozone (O3) and their interaction were investigated in two Mediterranean tree species, Fraxinus ornus L. (deciduous) and Quercus ilex L. (evergreen), having different leaf habits and resource use strategies. An experiment was conducted under controlled condition to analyse how nitrogen deposition affects the ecophysiological and biochemical traits, and to explore how the nitrogen-induced changes influence the response to O3.

Effects of nitrogen deposition, drought and their interaction, on functional and structural traits of fraxinus ornus L. and quercus ilex L.

A controlled experiment was conducted in order to understand how functional and structural traits of species with different leaf habits (Fraxinus ornus and Quercus ilex) shift as a consequence of nitrogen (N) addition (30 Kg ha yr-1), and to explore the effect that nitrogen has on the water stress response. The experiment was divided in two stages: stage I, nitrogen addition under well water condition; stage II, nitrogen addition under drought. Functionality of the photosynthetic machinery, growth and biomass partitioning were assessed. The N content at leaf level increases in F.

Similar factors underlie tree abundance in forests in native and alien ranges

Aim Alien plant species can cause severe ecological and economic problems, and therefore attract a lot of research interest in biogeography and related fields. To identify potential future invasive species, we need to better understand the mechanisms underlying the abundances of invasive tree species in their new ranges, and whether these mechanisms differ between their native and alien ranges.

The functional trait spectrum of European temperate grasslands

Questions: What is the functional trait variation of European temperate grasslands and how does this reflect global patterns of plant form and function? Do habitat specialists show trait differentiation across habitat types?. Location: Europe. Methods: We compiled 18 regeneration and non-regeneration traits for a continental species pool consisting of 645 species frequent in five grassland types. These grassland types are widely distributed in Europe but differentiated by altitude, soil bedrock and traditional long-term management and disturbance regimes.
