Modeling lateral facies heterogeneity of an upper Oligocene carbonate ramp (Salento, southern Italy)

The aim of this work is to reproduce a metre-scale facies heterogeneity 3D model of the Chattian Porto Badisco Calcarenite carbonate ramp outcropping in the Salento Peninsula (southern Italy). However, in shallow-water carbonate systems, capturing metre-scale facies heterogeneity in three-dimensional models remains controversial due to the possibility of facies coexistence and because their association can change through time and space.

The lower Rupelian cluster reefs of Majella platform, the shallow water record of Eocene to Oligocene transition

The Eocene-Oligocene Transition is a key interval in the evolution of the modern climate, representing the last greenhouse-icehouse transition faced by the Earth. Shallow-water carbonate systems hold essential information of the global changes related to the E-O Transition. In this work, we focus on the Majella Mountain carbonate ramp to identify the shallow-water sedimentary expression of the oceanographic and sea-level changes related to the E-O Transition, and to compare it with the deep-marine records and the coeval shallow-water successions.

Prismatic to asbestiform offretite from Northern Italy. Occurrence, morphology and crystal-chemistry of a new potentially hazardous zeolite

A multi-methodological approach, based upon field investigation, morphological characterization, chemical analysis and structure refinement was applied to different samples of fibrous offretite, a new potentially hazardous zeolite recently discovered in northern Italy. Their morphology ranges from stocky-prismatic to asbestiform. All the investigated fibers may be considered as "inhalable", and they are well within the range of the "more carcinogenic fibers" regarding diameter.

Surface reactivity of amphibole asbestos. A comparison between two tremolite samples with different surface area

Surface reactivity of a fibrous tremolite sample from Castelluccio Superiore (Italy) was investigated by means of free radical generation following incubation in H2O2solution buffered at pH 7.4, for several time points, ranging from 1 day to 1 month. Results obtained were compared with those of another fibrous tremolite sample (from Maryland, USA), with much smaller surface area. Structural, morphological, and chemical alterations induced on tremolite by incubation were investigated by HR-TEM/EDS.

Iron release in aqueous environment by fresh volcanic ash from Mount Etna (Italy) and Popocatépetl (Mexico) volcanoes

In this study, we performed leaching experiments for timescales of hours-to-months in deionized water on fresh volcanic ash from Mt. Etna (Italy) and Popocatépetl (Mexico) volcanos to monitor Fe release as a function of ash mineral chemistry and size, with the aim of clarifying Fe release mechanisms and eventually evaluating the impact of volcanic ash on marine and lacustrine environments. To define sample mineralogy and Fe speciation, inclusive characterization was obtained by means of XRF, SEM, XRPD, EELS and Mössbauer spectroscopies.

Kinematics and strain distribution in an orogen-scale shear zone. Insights from structural analyses and magnetic fabrics in the Gavarnie thrust, Pyrenees

This work aims to characterize the Gavarnie thrust, one of the large-scale thrusts that define the Alpine structure of the west-central sector of the Pyrenees. A detailed comparison of structural analysis and magnetic fabrics is carried out for the Paleozoic phyllonites of the Gavarnie thrust, in order to decipher strain distribution and transport direction.

The present paper reports the results of a mineralogical and petrographic study focused on the archaeometric characterization of Early Bronze Age pottery from the archaeological site of Khirbet al-Batrawy (Jordan), dated between 3000 and 2000 BC. Optical microscopy (OM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analyses are used to define the nature of the raw material, the technology of the ceramic production and their developing during the centuries.

The MIS 13 interglacial at Ceprano, Italy, in the context of middle pleistocene vegetation changes in southern Europe

Climatic and environmental changes of the Middle Pleistocene in Europe provide the context for an important phase in the evolution and dispersal of early hominins. Pollen records from terrestrial and marine sediment sequences reveal patterns not usually visible in palaeoenvironmental reconstructions from archaeological sites alone and show that hominin evolution took place against a background of marked environmental change as forests expanded and contracted in concert with global and regional climatic shifts.
