Cross-cultural differences in children’s conceptualizations of happiness at school

Children’s happiness at school has been mainly investigated from a quantitative perspective, largely overlooking what children understand by happiness and whether their conceptualizations are shaped by culture. Hence, in the present study, using a quantification of qualitative data, we investigated whether English (n = 421, M = 10.63 years, 223 girls) and Spanish (n = 223, M = 11.13 years, 112 girls) children reported different conceptualizations of happiness at school.

Endogenous amenities, tourists’ happiness and competitiveness

A key strategy for supporting destination competitiveness is to enhance endogenous amenities and tourists are the best candidate to evaluate them at the destination. In the analysis, we use a comprehensive dataset on foreign travellers to investigate their happiness at Italian destinations between 2005-2014. Using a theory-dependent approach to model happiness at the destination with respect to endogenous and exogenous amenities, personal characteristics and trip features, we show a great diversity in the mix of amenities affecting tourist happiness.

The Contributions of Self-Esteem, Loneliness, and Friendship to Children’s Happiness: The Roles of Gender and Age

Although literature on happiness has focused largely on adults and adolescents, research interest on subjective well-being in children has increasingly grown in recent years. We investigated the contributions of the self-esteem, loneliness, and friendship variables to children’s happiness after taking into account the moderating effects of gender and age. The children responded to questionnaires evaluating their happiness, friendship variables, social self-efficacy, loneliness, and self-esteem whereas the parents reported the children’s behavioral problems and prosocial behavior.

Positivity. The dispositional basis of happiness

The present study examined in a stringent developmental model whether positivity, conceptualized as a pervasive mode of appraising, viewing, and perceiving life from a positive stance, predicts chronic positive affectivity across time or vice versa. Participants [263 participants (47 % males)], aged 15.5 at the beginning of the study and 23.5 at the end, reported on measures of positivity and dispositional positive affect four times.
