Sociotechnical Transformative Effects of an ICT Project in Rural Bangladesh

The purpose of this article is to provide lessons from the field about an Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) project (Participatory Research and Ownership With Technology, Information and Change [PROTIC]) concerned with the use of mobile phones by women in remote villages in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government considers that the role of ICT in social and economic transformation is significant for the country’s development.

Community informatics and Information and Communications Technology for Development research projects frequently focus on the appropriation of ICTs and the design of information systems to meet the needs of communities. Such projects typically involve a range of participants reflecting different cultures and depend for their success on the ability of the project to bridge differences.

Drone Journalism and Community Voices

This paper aims to explore how Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), thanks
to its vertical spatiality and movement autonomy which allows the
conjuncture of above and below as a public space (Tuck S., 2018), could
provide materials to enhance a community-based narrative.
The growing use of drones in journalism, or “dronalism” (Goldberg et al.,
2013), brings a new perspective to both the traditional visual coverage of
news and the bottom-up journalistic practices, that rely mostly on mobile
