IUCN Red List

Short‐beaked common dolphins in the Gulf of Corinth are critically endangered

1. Local populations ('subpopulations') of globally abundant species can be exposed to human impacts that threaten their viability. Given the value of cetacean subpopulations as Evolutionary Significant Units, keystone and umbrella species, it is important to assess their conservation status separately and propose area-specific conservation measures.

The conservation status and distribution of Mediterranean saproxylic beetles

The Mediterranean Red List assessment is a review of the conservation status at regional level of approximately 6,000 species of animals and plants. This report summarizes the results for a key group of Mediterranean biodiversity: saproxylic beetles. Despite their key role in the ecosystem´s health and food chain, saproxylic beetles are still largely misunderstood and the current information gaps on these species´ population status, trends, and distribution are a reflection on how little we still know about them.

Citizen science data as an efficient tool for mapping protected saproxylic beetles

Global change imposes rapid assessments to obtain reliable and updated distribution data to implement conservation measures. This task is undoubtedly unaffordable for numerous invertebrate species, both in terms of time and economic resources, because they are often elusive, detectable life stages are present for a restricted time and ecological data are scarce. Citizen science might be able to provide a large number of records and these data might facilitate the evaluation of extinction risks.

New insights on the occurrence and conservation status in Italy of Alessioporus ichnusanus (Boletaceae), an IUCN red listed mycorrhizal species

The conservation status of Alessioporus ichnusanus is discussed considering new insights emerged from the IUCN global assessment. New locations were identified and Italy is confirmed as the center of distribution of this species. According to the IUCN categories and criteria, A. ichnusanus is assigned to the category Vulnerable C2a(i).

Values and challenges in the assessment of coprophilous fungi according to the IUCN Red List criteria. The case study of Poronia punctata (Xylariales, Ascomycota)

Coprophilous fungi are specialized microorganisms, playing key roles in ecosystems and in several other contexts, whose protection requires more substantial efforts. This paper aims to highlight and discuss valuable and critical aspects faced during the process of the threat status assessment of Poronia punctata, providing inspirations for future conservation actions.
