The use of Transcollation Technology for Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery lobectomy

Background: Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) lobectomy is now considered the preferred approach at many centers for early stage lung cancer. However, it needs an adequate learning curve, and it may be challenging in non-expert hands. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Transcollation Technology over Traditional Electrocautery to perform hilar and mediastinal dissection during VATS lobectomy. Methods: This is a single-center retrospective study including consecutive patients undergoing VATS lobectomy for lung cancer.

The impact of personalized nutritional support on postoperative outcome within the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program for liver resections: results from the NutriCatt protocol

Background: Malnutrition in liver surgery is correlated with higher postoperative complications and longer length of hospital stay (LOHS), the same items that ERAS programs try to optimize. However, to date, standardized dietary protocols have not been defined within ERAS programs. Aim of this study was to evaluate the impact on LOHS and postoperative complications, of a personalized nutritional protocol (NutriCatt) with diet and oral branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation, adopted within the ERAS program.

Robotic versus laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery in elderly patients: a propensity score match analysis

Background: Minimally invasive surgery in elderly patients with colorectal cancer remains controversial. The study aimed to compare the operative, postoperative, and oncologic outcomes of robotic (robotic colorectal resection surgery [RCRS]) versus laparoscopic colorectal resection surgery (LCRS) in elderly patients with colorectal cancer. Methods: Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to compare patients aged 70 years and more undergoing elective RCRS or LCRS for colorectal cancer between 2010 and 2017.

Healthcare-associated infections due to multidrug-resistant organisms: a surveillance study on extra hospital stay and direct costs

BACKGROUND: The increasing antimicrobial resistance poses a challenge for surveillance systems and raises concerns about the impact of multidrug-resistant organisms on patient safety. OBJECTIVE: To estimate extra hospital stay and economic burden of infections due to alert organisms - mostly multidrug-resistant - in a teaching hospital. METHODS: The present retrospective matched cohort study was conducted through the analysis of hospital admissions at Sant'Andrea Teaching Hospital in Rome from April to December 2015.

Criticism of learning curve in laparoscopic adrenalectomy. A systematic review

Laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) has become the treatment of choice for benign adrenal lesions. Lateral Transperitoneal Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy (LTLA) is considered the gold standard. The number of LTLAs a surgeon must perform, in order to complete his learning curve, is not well defined in Literature. Moreover, the few papers dealing with the learning curve for LTLAs show controversial results and consider different evaluation parameters.
