IgG antibody responses to the Aedes albopictus 34k2 salivary protein as novel candidate marker of human exposure to the tiger mosquito

Mosquitoes of the Aedes genus transmit arboviruses of great importance to human health as dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever. The tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus can play an important role as arboviral vector, especially when Aedes aegypti is absent or present at low levels. Remarkably, the rapid worldwide spreading of the tiger mosquito is expanding the risk of arboviral transmission also to temperate areas, and the autochthonous cases of chikungunya, dengue and Zika in Europe emphasize the need for improved monitoring and control.

An immunohistochemical study of the diagnostic value of TREM-1 as marker for fatal sepsis cases

Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM-1) is produced and up-regulated by exposure of myeloid cells to lipopolysaccharides or other components of either bacterial or fungal origin, which causes it to be strongly expressed on phagocytes that accumulate in inflamed areas. Because TREM-1 participates in septic shock and in amplifying the inflammatory response to bacterial and fungal infections, we believe it could be an immunohistochemical marker for postmortem diagnosis of sepsis.

Serum S100B protein as a marker of severity in Covid-19 patients

SARS-CoV-2 infection shows a wide-ranging clinical severity, requiring prognostic markers. We focused on S100B, a calcium-binding protein present in biological fluids, being a reliable biomarker in disorders having inflammatory processes as common basis and RAGE as main receptor. Since Covid-19 is characterized by a potent inflammatory response also involving RAGE, we tested if S100B serum levels were related to disease severity. Serum samples (n = 74) were collected from hospitalized SARS-CoV-2 positive patients admitted to Covid center.

Severe disease in Cystic Fibrosis and fecal calprotectin levels

Fecal calprotectin (FC) is used to asses the presence of intestinal inflammation also in patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and recent studies showed a correlation between bowel and lung disease in these patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the levels of FC in CF and correlate them with different phenotypes of disease. We enrolled a cohort of 54 CF patients and 50 healthy controls. In these patients, calprotectin has been assayed on a stools sample using an ELISA kit.
