Cranial trepanation. An ancient neurosurgical therapy? Thoughts of a follower of positivist medicine and anthropology

The authors' aim is to define a framework around the history of studies and analyses on cranial trepanation. In addition, based on the analytical approach of Abele de Blasio, the authors would like to reach an understanding of the various different interpretations of the origin and aetiology of the art of cranial trepanation, starting in the prehistoric era. In this brief study, historical discussions are intertwined with ethnoiatric and anthropometric techniques of the author, leading the reader into a fascinating discussion on the practice of trepanation in ancient populations.

What future for ultrasound in medicine?

What comes to mind when asked the question: “Welche Zukunft für Ultraschall in der Medizin” (What Future for Ultrasound in Medicine?)? I guess all of us would think about the editorial policies, publisher’s choices and administrative issues of our beloved journal and might frown. However, at the beginning of the year 2018, the future of the journal is fortunately very bright.

Fine-tuning medical writing. Pitfalls and strategies

While slips of the pen do not necessarily prevent readers from understanding the contents of a text, they can label authors as outsiders, as not fully-fledged members of the discourse community to which they seek entry. Although healthcare writing belongs to the realm of “scientific literature”, it should be harmonic, fine-tuned, mutatis mutandis, like a well-conducted symphony orchestra, where a false note, even that of a single badly-played instrument can compromise its overall harmony and excellence of performance.

From Ejtm (European Journal of Translational Myology) to Ejt3M (European Journal of Translational Myology, Mobility, Medicine)

This first 2018 issue of the European Journal of Translational Myology presents many novelties, that demonstrate that the journal is vital and expanding its authorship, readership and relevance from focused fields of biology, physiology, diagnostic, management and rehabilitation of skeletal muscle tissue to the interesting and clinically relevant fields of human mobility and to those of general medicine. The Editorial Board is consequently being expanded to allow fair and expert evaluation of the broader interests and expertise of the Authors submitting manuscripts.

The role of stereotactic body radiation therapy in oligometastatic colorectal cancer

Rationale: Regorafenib is the new standard third-line therapy in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). However, the reported 1-year overall survival rate does not exceed 25%. Patient concerns: A 55-year-old man affected by mCRC, treated with regorafenib combined with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), showing a durable response. Interventions: After 6 months of regorafenib, a PET/CT scan revealed a focal uptake in a solid lung nodule which was treated with SBRT, whereas continuing regorafenib administration.

Cervello e natura umana: note su Descartes e il dibattito medico sei-settecentesco sulla corporeità della mente

In The Man Machine (1738) La Mettrie criticizes the received view of Descartes’s portrait as radically devaluing the body in favour of the mind. Descartes’ bête-machine theory, according to La Mettrie, laid the groundwork for medical materialism. In this chapter I will focus on the work of an early Dutch proponent of Cartesian physiology, Hendrik Le Roy (Henricus Regius, 1598-1679), who saw the mental activity and moral character as functions of the human body and the brain.
