The synergistic effect between positivity, socio-demographic factors and smoking cessation: results of a cohort study

OBJECTIVE: To examine the extent to which a effect does exist between Positivity (POS), smoking and socio-demographic factors in determining quitting smoking in subjects participating in a Group Counselling Program (GCP) for smoking cessation.METHODS: 481 subjects were contacted through a telephone call. A logistic regression analysis was carried out.

Severe pelvic organ prolapse treated by vaginal native tissue repair: long-term analysis of outcomes in 146 patients

Aims: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of vaginal native tissue repair (VNTR) as a surgical treatment for severe pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and, second, to evaluate the impact on the quality-of-life (QoL) and sexual function. Methods: Women with symptomatic POP (?III stage according to POP Quantification System) with or without stress urinary incontinence (SUI) underwent VNTR. The clinical stage, 3-day voiding diary, and urodynamic testing were evaluated in the preoperative and postoperative times, respectively.

Optical control of pain in vivo with a photoactive mGlu5 receptor negative allosteric modulator

Light-operated drugs constitute a major target in drug discovery, since they may provide spatiotemporal resolution for the treatment of complex diseases (i.e. chronic pain). JF-NP-26 is an inactive photocaged derivative of the metabotropic glutamate type 5 (mGlu(5)) receptor negative allosteric modulator raseglurant. Violet light illumination of JF-NP-26 induces a photochemical reaction prompting the active-drug's release, which effectively controls mGlu5 receptor activity both in ectopic expressing systems and in striatal primary neurons.

Essential oil extraction, chemical analysis and anti-candida activity of calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi subsp. glandulosa (Req.) ball-new approaches

A comprehensive study on essential oils (EOs) extracted from different Calamintha nepeta
(L.) Savi subsp. glandulosa (Req.) Ball (CG) samples from Tarquinia (Italy) is reported. In this study,
the 24-hour steam distillation procedure for EO preparation, in terms of different harvesting and
extraction times, was applied. The GC/MS analysis showed that CG essential oils from Tarquinia
(TEOCG) belong to pulegone-rich chemotype. The analysis of 44 samples revealed that along

The influence of pH on the scleroglucan and scleroglucan/borax systems

The effects that an increase of environmental pH has on the triple helix of scleroglucan (Sclg)
and on the Sclg/borax hydrogel are reported. Rheological experiments show that the hydrogel is less
sensitive to pH increase than Sclg alone, while at pH = 14 a dramatic viscosity decrease takes place for
both systems. This effect is evidenced also by the reduced water uptake and anisotropic elongation
detected, at pH = 14, by the swelling behaviour of tablets prepared with the Sclg/borax system.

Geographical characterization by MAE-HPLC and NIR methodologies and carbonic anhydrase inhibition of Saffron components

A microwave-assisted extraction method was optimised for the recovery of bioactive compounds from Crocus sativus L. stigmas with the use of water/ethanol mixture. HPLC-DAD was employed to evaluate the extraction parameters, in particular, solvent type and volume, and the duration of the procedure. Microwave-assisted extraction enhanced the recovery of the active principles, limiting extraction time and solvent waste.

Elevated plasma copeptin levels identify the presence and severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obesity

Introduction: Copeptin is the stable surrogate marker of vasopressin (VP), which is released in response to elevated plasma osmolality or low blood pressure. Elevated plasma copeptin levels are associated with higher risk of insulin resistance-related disorders, such as type 2 diabetes (T2DM), metabolic syndrome (MS), and cardiovascular disease, and experimental reduction of circulating VP levels is shown to significantly decrease hepatic fat content in obese rats, independently from body adiposity.

Subhepatic mass occurrence after using oxidized and regenerated cellulose polymer in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A case series

BACKGROUND: Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) is a bioabsorbable surgical hemostatic. We present the first prospective case series of circumscribed mass occurrence after using ORC in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: Tabotamp (Ethicon, Inc., Somerville, NJ) in the form of tightly woven knitted patches was used to achieve hemostasis in 83 patients submitted to LC. RESULTS: A subhepatic mass was detected in five patients and radiologic characteristics were described. Abdominal contrast enhanced CT showed a heterogeneous soft-tissue mass.

Yersinia enterocolitica in Italy. A case of septicemia and abdominal aortic aneurysm infection

We report a case of Yersinia enterocolitica septicemia in a 63-year-old patient admitted to the Vascular Surgery Department of Umberto I Hospital (Rome, Italy) for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The microorganism, recovered from both peripheral blood cultures and aneurysmatic aortic wall specimens, was identified as Y. enterocolitica using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight analysis (MALDI-TOF MS) and 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The isolate responsible for septicemia belonged to the O:9 serotype (biogroup 2).
