The deep-sea polyextremophile Halobacteroides lacunaris TB21 rough-type LPS: Structure and inhibitory activity towards toxic LPS

The structural characterization of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from extremophiles has
important implications in several biomedical and therapeutic applications. The polyextremophile
Gram-negative bacterium Halobacteroides lacunaris TB21, isolated from one of the most extreme
habitats on our planet, the deep-sea hypersaline anoxic basin Thetis, represents a fascinating
microorganism to investigate in terms of its LPS component. Here we report the elucidation of

Histone deacetylases contribute to excitotoxicity-triggered degeneration of retinal ganglion cells in vivo

Excitotoxicity is known to modulate the nuclear accumulation, and thus activity state, of histone deacetylases (HDACs) in pyramidal neurons. In the retina, deregulation in activity and expression of different HDACs has been linked to pathological conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, retinal ischemia, glaucoma, and acute optic nerve injury. Up to now, however, the effects of in vivo excitotoxicity on the different HDACs in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) have not been thoroughly investigated.

Biological evaluation and structure-activity relationships of imidazole-based compounds as antiprotozoal agents

We discovered a series of azole antifungal compounds as effective antiprotozoal agents. They displayed promising inhibitory activities within the micromolar-submicromolar range against P. falciparum, L. donovani, and T. b. rhodesiense. Moreover, most of such compounds showed excellent nanomolar IC50against T. cruzi, showing also very low cytotoxicity. Discussion of structure-activity relationships and biological data for these compounds are provided against the different parasites. To assess the mechanism of action against T.

Phenotypic effects of chronic and acute use of methiopropamine in a mouse model

Methiopropamine (MPA) is a structural analogue of methamphetamine and belongs to the category of the novel psychoactive substances. To the best of our knowledge, no experimental study has been performed to evaluate the organ damage evoked by MPA administration in an animal model. Therefore, the main purpose of the present study was to investigate the histological changes in CD-1 male mice following the chronic administration of MPA.

Is obesity the missing link between COVID-19 severity and air pollution?

In the previous publication “Can atmospheric pollution be considered a co-factor in extremely high level of SARS-CoV-2 lethality in Northern Italy?” Conticini et al. hypothesized that the surplus of lethality of the novel SARS-CoV-2 in Northern Italy may be at least in part explained by the evidence of highest pollution reported in this area, as both severe COVID-19 and smog exposure are correlated to an innate immune system hyper-activation with subsequent lung inflammation and injury.
