Presence and fate of microplastics in the water sources: focus on the role of wastewater and drinking water treatment plants

Microplastics are nowadays considered as ubiquitous pollutants since have been found widespread in all environmental compartments, particularly in the water sources. In the urban water cycle, the drinking water treatment plants and the wastewater treatment plants are the first and last barriers to microplastics pollution, respectively. The present work aims at presenting the information available on microplastic presence in the urban water cycle, reporting and linking what is known at the different stages.

Molecular and cellular responses to short exposure to bisphenols A, F, and S and eluates of microplastics in C. elegans

Bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) have been developed as an alternative to bisphenol A (BPA), a well-known endocrine disruptor, leading to their detection in the aquatic environment. In this work, we used the animal model Caenorhabditis elegans to improve our understanding of their potential effects on the biota and the environment.

Microplastics characterization by hyperspectral imaging in the SWIR range

The aim of this study is to develop a new methodology based on optical sensors able to recognize and characterize microplastics collected in the marine environment. In recent years, this pollution represents an environmental emergency with serious effects on human health and marine organisms. The study was carried out on microplastics collected in different geographical areas.
