Decision making and motor control

This interdisciplinary research group focuses on studying the physiological and behavioral correlates of decision-making processes, motor decisions, and movement control guided by decisional processes. The primary goal is to unveil the neural mechanisms and computational principles underlying how organisms, including humans, select appropriate actions and execute them effectively to achieve their goals.

MOTOR DYSFUNCTION IN MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT AS TESTED BY KINEMATIC ANALYSIS AND TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION

Objective
Previous studies have demonstrated voluntary movement alterations as well as motor cortex excitability and plasticity changes in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). To investigate the pathophysiology of movement abnormalities in MCI, we tested possible relationships between movement abnormalities and primary motor cortex alterations in patients.
Methods

Visuomotor Integration for Coupled Hand Movements in Healthy Subjects and Patients With Stroke

Many studies have investigated the bilateral upper limb coordination during movements under different motor and visual conditions. Bilateral training has also been proposed as an effective rehabilitative protocol for patients with stroke. However, the factors influencing in-phase vs. anti-phase coupling have not yet been fully explored.

Bradykinesia in Alzheimer's disease and its neurophysiological substrates

Objective: Alzheimer's disease is primarily characterized by cognitive decline; recent studies, however, emphasize the occurrence of motor impairment in this condition. Here, we investigate whether motor impairment, objectively evaluated with kinematic techniques, correlates with neurophysiological measures of the primary motor cortex in Alzheimer's disease. Methods: Twenty patients and 20 healthy subjects were enrolled. Repetitive finger tapping was assessed by means of a motion analysis system.

The Walking Brain: factors influencing human gait

Human walking is a standardized, repeatable and rhythmic locomotor act, with biomechanical patterns reported as roughly common to all healthy individuals. However, some gait patterns could be affected by cognitive, social and cultural factors. This mini-review aims at investigating top-down related differences in walking healthy patterns due to the above factors. The reviewed literature reported that socio-economic factors are at the basis of differences in pedestrian walking speed, related to the pace of life: faster speed was found in industrialized countries than in developing ones.

Development of motor coordination during joint action in mid-childhood

The ability to act jointly with others is a hallmark of primate evolution and is fundamental for human development. In recent years, the study of coordination strategies between individuals performing joint actions has received growing attention. However, when, in the course of post-natal development, this cognitive-motor function emerges is still unknown.
