Altered speech-related cortical network in frontotemporal dementia

Background: In healthy subjects (HS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) demonstrated an increase in motor-evoked potential (MEP) amplitudes during specific linguistic tasks. This finding indicates functional connections between speech-related cortical areas and the dominant primary motor cortex (M1). Objective: To investigate M1 function with TMS and the speech-related cortical network with neuroimaging measures in frontotemporal dementia (FTD), including the non-fluent variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfv-PPA) and the behavioral variant of FTD (bv-FTD).

Thalamocortical disconnection affects the somatic marker and social cognition. A case report

Thalamo-cortical connectivity was characterised in a patient with bilateral infarct of the thalami, without evidence of cognitive deficits in everyday life. Patient underwent social and emotional tests, Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), with and without concomitant heart rate variability (HRV) recording and at 3T-MRI to assess thalamo-cortical connectivity. Patient showed impairment at the IGT, in somatic marker, in emotions and theory of mind. MRI documented a bilateral damage of the centromedian-parafascicular complex.

From cerebellar alterations to mood disorders: A systematic review

Background: Several studies have shown cerebellar abnormalities during depressive and manic states, although the specific cerebellar role in mood fluctuations remains poorly defined. Therefore, the study of pathologies characterized by frequent mood swings, such as bipolar disorder, is of great interest to investigate the relationship between the cerebellum and mood alterations.

Adnexal masses in pregnancy: an updated review on diagnosis and treatment

Adnexal masses are not common in pregnancy. They are often discovered incidentally during routine ultrasound examinations. In general, 24%–40% of the cases are benign tumors; up to 8% are malignant tumors. Adnexal masses are usually asymptomatic, but sometimes can be responsible for abdominal or pelvic pain. Transvaginal and transabdominal ultrasound is essential to define the morphology of pelvic masses and to distinguish between benign and malignant cases.

Role of prenatal magnetic resonance imaging in fetuses with isolated mild or moderate ventriculomegaly in the era of neurosonography: international multicenter study

Objectives: To assess the role of fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting associated anomalies in fetuses presenting with mild or moderate isolated ventriculomegaly (VM) undergoing multiplanar ultrasound evaluation of the fetal brain.

Harmonization of neuroimaging biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases: a survey in the imaging community of perceived barriers and suggested actions

Introduction: Molecular, functional, and structural neuroimaging biomarkers are largely used to study neurodegenerative diseases, but their benefits to patients/science might be greatly enhanced by improving standardization and cross-validation. In this EU Joint Programme-Neurodegenerative Diseases Research–funded project, we surveyed the neuroimaging community to assess perceived barriers in multicentric neuroimaging harmonization and actions to overcome them.

High?resolution multiparametric MRI of contemporary and waterlogged archaeological wood

High?resolution NMR images on three different present?day wood samples and an archaeological wood specimen were presented and discussed. Although the spatial resolution is still low to perform dendrology for the exact identification of the wooden species, the T2?spin?density weighted images exhibit contrasts that are in excellent agreement with optical histological images. On the other hand, T2* and T1?weighted images provide physiological information that is not obtainable by the usual light microscopic investigations.

Standardised nomenclature, abbreviations, and units for the study of bone marrow adiposity: report of the nomenclature working group of the International Bone Marrow Adiposity Society

Research into bone marrow adiposity (BMA) has expanded greatly since the late 1990s, leading to development of new methods for the study of bone marrow adipocytes. Simultaneously, research fields interested in BMA have diversified substantially. This increasing interest is revealing fundamental new knowledge of BMA; however, it has also led to a highly variable nomenclature that makes it difficult to interpret and compare results from different studies. A consensus on BMA nomenclature has therefore become indispensable.

USPIO-labeling in M1 and M2-polarized macrophages: an in vitro study using a clinical Magnetic Resonance scanner

Aim of the study was to evaluate USPIO labeling in different macrophage populations using a clinical 3.0T MR unit with optical and electron microscopy as the gold standard. Human monocytic cell line THP-1 cells were differentiated into macrophages. Afterwards, M0 macrophages were incubated with IL-4 and IL-13 in order to obtain M2 polarized macrophages or with IFN-gamma and LPS for classical macrophage activation (M1). These groups were incubated with USPIO-MR contrast agent (P904) for 36?hr; M0, M0?+?P904, M1?+? P904, and M2?+?P904 were analyzed in gel phantoms with a 3.0T MR scanner.
