The native coronal orientation of tibial plateaus may limit the indications to perform a kinematic aligned total knee arthroplasty

Purpose: To investigate the coronal alignment of tibial plateaus in normal and osteoarthritic knees and to simulate the effects of a tibial cut performed in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using a kinematic alignment technique with standard instrumentation.

Assessing the real benefits of surgery for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis without instability and spondylolisthesis: a single surgeon experience with a mean 8-year follow-up

Background: The degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis is one of the most commonly treated spinal disorders in older adults; despite its increasing frequency, it is not yet clear what the most effective therapy might be. The aim of this study is to investigate the very long term results of a homogenized cohort of patients suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis: the first subset of patients operated on with laminectomy and the second subset of patients was also advised to undergo laminectomy but never operated on.

Comparison of pure lateral and oblique lateral inter-body fusion for treatment of lumbar degenerative disk disease: a multicentric cohort study

Purpose: The most effective interbody fusion technique for degenerative disk disease (DDD) is still controversial. The purpose of our study is to compare pure lateral (LLIF) and oblique lateral (OLIF) approaches for the treatment of lumbar DDD from L1–L2 to L4–L5, in terms of clinical and radiological outcomes. Materials and methods: 45 patients underwent lumbar interbody fusion for pure lumbar DDD from L1–L2 to L4–L5 through LLIF (n = 31, mean age 62.1 years, range 45–78 years) or OLIF (n = 14, mean age 57.4 years, range 47–77 years).

Trabecular bone score (TBS) is associated with sub-clinical vertebral fractures in HIV-infected patients

Fragility fractures risk is increased among HIV infected patients. Bone microstructure alterations, in addition to bone mineral density (BMD) reduction, might be responsible for the increased risk. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of vertebral fractures (VFs) and their association with trabecular bone score (TBS), an indirect index of bone microstructure, in a cohort of HIV-infected subjects.

Biomechanical characterization of the junzuki karate punch: indexes of performance

The aims of this study were: (i) to determine kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic characteristics of Junzuki karate punch in professional karate athletes; (ii) to identify biomechanical parameters that correlate with punch force and lead to a higher punching performance; (iii) to verify the presence of muscle co-activation in the upper limb, trunk, and lower limb muscles. Data were collected from nine experienced karatekas from the Accademia Italiana Karate e Arti Marziali during the execution of the specific punch.

Interlocking horizontal mattress suture versus Kakiuchi technique in repair of Achilles tendon rupture: a biomechanical study

In recent years, the type of surgical treatment for Achilles tendon rupture has been the subject of controversial debate. This biomechanical study evaluates for the first time in literature the ultimate failure load (UFL) of interlocking horizontal mattress (IHM) suture as compared with Kakiuchi suture in Achilles tendon rupture. The hypothesis is that IHM suture can be performed also for Achilles tendon rupture and ensures higher resistance compared with the traditional Kakiuchi suture.
