Medicolegal considerations involving iatrogenic lingual nerve damage

The aim of this review is to improve risk management strategies through analysis of the anatomic, semeiotic, and medicolegal aspects that characterize iatrogenic lingual nerve damage (LND) and its legal consequences in the case of legal proceedings for a claim for compensation. In dental practice, LND can be caused by local or general anesthesia or by mechanical, chemical, or thermal mechanisms. A certain postoperative identification of LND etiopathogenesis is often very challenging because it can be difficult to show at what time the damage occurred and which mechanism actually caused it.

Oral and dental health of Italian drug addicted in methadone treatment

Objectives: Our group recorded the characteristic of oro-dental health among a group of drug addicts in recovery treatment with methadone, and it evaluated the changes related to the withdrawal therapy. Methodology: A sample of 50 drug addicts in treatment with methadone was included in this study. At the beginning of the withdrawal therapy, the authors recorded the parameters involved in the most common oral diseases. Moreover, it was evaluated how, during the rehabilitation protocol, the behavioral parameters and the xerostomia that influence the oral health changed.

Treatments of sleep bruxism in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective: Treatment of sleep bruxism (SB) in children is not well established. The aim of this study was to develop evidence-based recommendations on SB therapy in children between the ages of 2 and 17. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. Literature searches were performed using MedLine (PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library (November 30 2017). Results: The search strategy identified 268 potential articles; 10 papers were included in the qualitative synthesis and 3 in the meta-analysis, for a total of 94 patients.

Maxillo-mandibular reconstruction in pediatric patients: how to do it?

Maxillo-mandibular reconstruction in pediatric patients involves particular functional and cosmetic implications. Attention is required for the craniofacial growth over time, involvement of the permanent dentition, facial symmetry, and donor site morbidity. Our aim is to identify the best reconstructive options for maxilla-mandibular defects in children (<18 years) based on our experience with 25 pediatric patients. We believe that reconstruction has to be performed at the same time as resection in pediatric patients.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma in a patient previously treated for an intestinal-type adenocarcinoma: metachronous neoplasms or recurrence of a different tumor type?

A case of a sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma occurring 2 years after a successfully surgically treated intestinal-type adenocarcinoma has never been reported. Treatment modality of paranasal sinus cancer strictly depends on histology so it is important to recognize a different tumor type in the follow-up of these patients

Laryngopharyngeal reflux in obstructive sleep apnoea patients: literature review and meta-analysis

Purpose: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a frequent condition in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) patients and different studies have been published in the last years about this topic. A review of the published literature regarding LPR in OSA patients has been reported. A meta-analysis to evaluate the incidence of LPR in OSA patients and correlate LPR positivity with OSA patients' characteristics has been performed.

Whole exome sequencing in an Italian family with isolated maxillary canine agenesis and canine eruption anomalies

Objective: The aim of this study was the clinical and molecular characterization of a family segregating a trait consisting of a phenotype specifically involving the maxillary canines, including agenesis, impaction and ectopic eruption, characterized by incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. Design: Clinical standardized assessment of 14 family members and a whole-exome sequencing (WES) of three affected subjects were performed. WES data analyses (sequence alignment, variant calling, annotation and prioritization) were carried out using an in-house implemented pipeline.
