Immunotherapy for platinum-resistant ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer is characterized by a high mortality on incidence ratio. Although the majority of patients achieve complete response after primary treatment, approximately 65–80% of patients recur with the first 5 years. Platinum-free interval is one of the main prognostic factors. Patients recurring with 6 months within the end of platinum-based chemotherapy are characterized by poor prognosis. To date no effective treatment modality are identified for those patients. The mainstay of treatment for platinum-resistant ovarian cancer is single agent chemotherapy.

Risk of cancer after assisted reproduction: a review of the available evidences and guidance to fertility counselors

Infertile women requiring ovarian stimulation and assisted reproduction techniques (ART) are faced with difficult issues. The fear that using hormones could increase their risk of cancer is the most significant. One of the main challenges for assessing cancer risk after ART is the difficulty to separate it from the underlying condition of infertility per se. The delay or the inability to achieve a pregnancy is an important risk factor for breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer. We analyzed the current literature on the topic.

Hepatobiliary disease resection in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer: prognostic role and optimal cytoreduction

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety in terms of prognostic significance and perioperative morbidity and mortality of cytoreduction in patients affected by advance ovarian cancer and hepato-biliary metastasis. Methods: Patients with a least one hepatobiliary metastasis who have undergone surgical treatment with curative intent of were considered for the study. Perioperative complications were evaluated and graded with Accordion severity Classification. Five-year PFS and OS were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier curve.

Ovarian Cancer Metastasis to the Breast: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Although ovarian cancer often presents as a widespread disease, metastases to the breast and/or axillary lymph nodes are a very rare event, accounting for only 0.03-0.6% of all breast cancers. Its early recognition and accurate distinction from primary breast cancer are of crucial importance to choose an adequate systemic therapy over unnecessary surgeries. We presented the case of a 53-year-old woman who was diagnosed with breast metastases 2 years after the diagnosis of advanced primary serous ovarian cancer.

CTNNB1 p.L31P mutation in an ovarian endometrioid carcinoma with synchronous uterine endometrioid carcinoma

We performed next generation sequencing of DNA extracted from the neoplastic tissues obtained from a patient who underwent surgery for a large right ovarian carcinoma (OC) of endometrioid type associated with endometrial cancer (EC). This was done in order to ascertain whether the tumors were synchronous endometrial/ovarian cancers or an advanced metastatic stage from either the ovary or the uterus. Pathologic criteria favoured synchronous EC/OC.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of cancer stem cell biomarker aldehyde dehydrogenase-1 (ALDH1) with ovarian cancer patients' prognosis and clinico-pathological characteristics.
METHODS: The electronic searches were performed in January 2018 through the databases PubMed, MEDLINE and Scopus by searching the terms: "ovarian cancer" AND "immunohistochemistry" AND ["aldehyde dehydrogenase-1" OR "ALDH1" OR "cancer stem cell"]. Studies evaluating the impact of ALDH1 expression on ovarian cancer survival and clinico-pathological variables were selected.
