Ozone as adjuvant support in the treatment of COVID-19: A preliminary report of probiozovid trial

The evaluation of new therapeutic resources against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) represents a priority in clinical research considering the minimal options currently available. To evaluate the adjuvant use of systemic oxygen-ozone administration in the early control of disease progression in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. PROBIOZOVID is an ongoing, interventional, randomized, prospective, and double-arm trial enrolling patient with COVID-19 pneumonia. From a total of 85 patients screened, 28 were recruited.

Evaluation of salivary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-8) in periodontal patients undergoing non-surgical periodontal therapy and mouthwash based on ozonated olive oil: a randomized clinical trial

Background: Extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a pivotal role in the damage to the periodontal tissue in patients with periodontitis. Scaling and root planning (SRP) attempt to control the plaque amount and consequentially reduce the bacterial load. Non-surgical periodontal treatment could be integrated with drug therapy and physiotherapy procedures such as ozone therapy.

Role of extracellular vesicles in cell-cell communication and inflammation following exposure to pulmonary toxicants

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as key regulators of cell-cell communication during inflammatory responses to lung injury induced by diverse pulmonary toxicants including cigarette smoke, air pollutants, hyperoxia, acids, and endotoxin. Many lung cell types, including epithelial cells and endothelial cells, as well as infiltrating macrophages generate EVs. EVs appear to function by transporting cargo to recipient cells that, in most instances, promote their inflammatory activity.

Sanitation: a set of interventions mandated by the Italian government to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in non-medical facilities

There have been several concerns about the environmental persistence of SARS-CoV-2 virus. These concerns led to the formulation of sanitation measures that try to lower the risk of indirect transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in non-medical facilities. This manuscript will elucidate the topic of environmental persistence of SARS-CoV-2. This will benefit the occupational health professionals two-fold. It describes the proper techniques for an effective sanitation of the workplace. It also explains how to protect workers who are responsible for carrying out these interventions.

Use of ozone-based eye drops. A series of cases in veterinary and human spontaneous ocular pathologies

Conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis, and corneal ulcers are common eye disorders frequently diagnosed in both humans and animals, and are currently treated by topical administration of eye drops containing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents. The current molecules often lack efficacy because infections in hypoxic tissue contain methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa; thus, new products for the treatment of ocular pain and inflammation are needed.

Enhanced degradation of paracetamol by combining UV with electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide and ozone

The in-situ production of highly oxidizing species represents a sustainable approach for the treatment of unregulated emerging contaminants. In this article, we investigate the UV induced degradation and mineralization of paracetamol that represents one of the most frequently prescribed and sold drugs worldwide. In particular, this work compares two advanced oxidation processes based on photolysis of electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and ozone (O3). The H2O2 electrosynthesis has been performed via oxygen reduction on gas diffusion electrodes (GDE).

Electrochemically assisted decomposition of ozone for degradation and mineralization of Diuron

In this work, we explore the possibility of enhancing the ozonation of a solution of Diuron by combination with electrochemical processes. To this aim, the ozonation was performed in a membrane free electrolyzer where a reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) and a stainless steel (SS) cathode have been alternatively tested and compared. The effect of pH, current density and ozone flow on degradation and mineralization of Diuron has been investigated. The involvement of radical species has been verified by means of test conducted with selective scavenging agents.

Growing season extension affects ozone uptake by European forests

Climate change significantly modifies terrestrial ecosystems and vegetation activity, yet little is known about how climate change and ozone pollution interact to affect forest health. Here we compared the trends of two metrics widely used to protect forests against negative impacts of ozone pollution, the AOT40 (Accumulated Ozone over Threshold of 40 ppb) which only depends on surface air ozone concentrations, and the POD (Phytotoxic Ozone Dose) which relies on the amount of ozone uptaken by plants through stomata.
