Resistive wall impedance in elliptical multilayer vacuum chambers

The resistive wall impedance of a vacuum chamber with elliptic cross section is of particular interest for circular particle accelerators as well as for undulators in free electron lasers. By using the electric field of a point charge and of a small dipole moving at arbitrary speed in an elliptical vacuum chamber, expressed in terms of Mathieu functions, in this paper we take into account the finite conductivity of the beam pipe walls by means of the surface impedance, and evaluate the longitudinal and transverse driving and detuning impedances for any beam velocity.

Technology developments of ELI-NP gamma beam system

The ELI-NP gamma beam system (GBS) is a linac based gamma-source in construction in Magurele (RO) by the European consortium EuroGammaS led by INFN. Photons with tunable energy, from 0.2 to 19.5 MeV, and with intensity and brilliance beyond the state of the art, will be produced by Compton back-scattering between a high quality electron beam (up to 740 MeV) and an intense laser pulse at 100 Hz repetition rate. Production of very intense photon flux with narrow bandwidth requires multi-bunch operation and laser recirculation at the interaction point.

Plasmonic lenses for tunable ultrafast electron emitters at the nanoscale

Simultaneous spatiotemporal confinement of energetic electron pulses to femtosecond and nanometer scales is a topic of great interest in the scientific community, given the potential impact of such developments across a wide spectrum of scientific and industrial applications. For example, in ultrafast electron scattering, nanoscale probes would enable accurate maps of structural dynamics in materials with nanoscale heterogeneity, thereby leading to an understanding of the role of boundaries and defects on macroscopic properties.

Building the impedance model of a real machine

A reliable impedance model of a particle accelerator can be built by combining the beam coupling impedances of all the components. This is a necessary step to be able to evaluate the machine performance limitations, identify the main contributors in case an impedance reduction is required, and study the interaction with other mechanisms such as optics nonlinearities, transverse damper, noise, space charge, electron cloud, beam-beam (in a collider).
